Anyone had an issue with this on the new motor? A friend just got a new Taco, 1st trip towing his trailer and it died. As he put it, the Crankshaft Position Sensor "Melted Down". Truck is sitting at Toyota in Lompoc waiting for parts as it seems there are 32 of these on back order in the US. Is this a fairly common issue with the new motor as the back order numbers suggest, or a rare instance. He is not a happy camper.

I think it will be Crank Shaft Position sensor. There should be no need to sense the crankcase. ;)

Not sure what 'melted down' means exactly. And I've not seen one on this vehicle. But typically they aren't located where excess heat would be an issue.

Back order could mean some problems are occurring. Or just that no 'extras' have hit the parts bins yet, because there is no expectation for them needing replacement this early. While the engine is 'new', it's kind of surprising that particularly part would be unique to that motor. It's not very sophisticated as far as sensors go.

Keep us posted. This is one of the complaints on here, in addition to the automatic fluid levels, that is actually interesting.

I don't own a new tacoma, but I have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee with over 200k miles and my jeep would stall every now and then. Looked on jeep forums and it turned out to be a crank shaft position sensor, fixed the problem.

It is pretty surprising to me that a new tacoma would require a new crank shaft position sensor.

I did have a Jeep Cherokee with this problem once. Really annoying that the vehicle would just decide to die for no discernible rhyme or reason. Wouldn't restart until it cooled down, which took about 10 minutes.

Yep...Crankshaft...I was spacing when I set the title. I am assuming it is an electronic piece, and by "Melted Down" I would guess he meant it
fried itself". Either way, it quit doing what it needs to do and the part is on back order...just thought I'd check and see if others with the new v-6 motor were seeing this issue also.

Now that's decent compensation............ They know it's unlikely to be needed, so it's 'cheap' for them, but it makes the owner feel good.

But still, it's the kind of gesture that should be on something of that nature, IMHO.

That's how I felt about it too, if it's a toyota, shouldn't need to use the warranty, but at least it protects me in case something like this happens again.

My 2016 TRD Tacoma has had to crank shaft sensors fail in 5400 miles. It is in the dealership right now for the second one.

Have they offered a root cause? Just a failed sensor? Poor mounting location? Harness issues?

I agree all vehicles break but not 2 of the same parts in 5400 miles. There is an issue the the crank sensors on the new engines

Engineers at Toyota are involved with mine and still not resolved. If they can't fix it not sure who can.

I guess we will find out if anyone else on here reports the issue. It's certainly unfortunate, hopefully it won't be a common problem.

I'm also curious as to what would cause the crankshaft position sensor to as you put it, "melted down".

That's not saying much. Its not uncommon for engineers to tell us "when you figure it out, let us know". Most TSB's are created by engineers, they are created by techs for techs.

just get tired of the automotive forum mentaility that if 1 or 2 vehicles suffer the same issue, they must be junk. All issues are blown up on a forum.
