I have an ultra gauge now, and the use of my Iphone for gauge purposes appeals to me a little more since I have the phone mounted to a magnetic mount that is centered via my CD player slot. Also my UG doesn't display Trans temps, and I am sure they could upgrade it for a few bucks but I am all about checking other things out

I haven't tried, but I could try it out tonight. The ELM327 creates a wifi network that your device joins, I wouldn't think an iPhone would override that connection to reach out to the net while staying connected to the adapter. I am using a spare iPhone that's jailbroken to open and launch the app when power is connected (when I turn my truck on) then it connects automatically to the adapter if it lost connection (the elm327 continiously emits the wifi signal, but doesn't drain the battery, hasn't had any affect on mine in the 1+ year it's been in) and then connects to the adapter.

You can join the wifi network, but can't connect to the adapter until your truck is on.

My current dashboard has RPM, Speed, Total Fuel, Instant Fuel, Torque, Intake Temp, Coolant Temp, Input Voltage. There are tons of pids I can try ones you are curious about it.

My main concerns are oil psi, trans temp, coolant temp and fuel average

I don't see an oil psi, just temp (not sure if it actually works, i'll try it on the way home), coolant temp works and fuel works. There are a few forums posts about getting trans temp to work, i've never tried, you have to enter a custom one, and I have no way of verifying the numbers I may get would be correct. I'll try and look at a few if I have time and see if I can get them to work.

USB cable to a charger hardwired, much like you would hardwire a gps or radar detector. Mine goes an add-a-fuse to the inside fuse panel. Jailbroken with activator configured to open, lock, launch app if not launched, connect to wifi if not connected and all that good stuff.

Thanks, just found this thread, very helpful, trying out the trans temp on the way home. Last post talks about using data even when connected to the wifi, so you should be good there. I'll try it out to be sure for you though.

Also discovered that dashcommand doesn't allow custom pids, so you'll almost certainly need to use obdfusion, which I like more anyways. :)

Do you find the MPG readout to be accurate? For instance, on a recent road trip my wife's Prius showed that we got 54 mpg but when I did the math at the pump it was 49.7.

Mine, seems to be a little off, i'm going to reset it since I just got new tires and see what it says. Fuelly shows me at 17.8 the app shows my average at 19.6. Both are overall, so fuelly could be off from missing or bad numbers and never fixing. I'm resetting on my next tank and will compare the two numbers.

Thanks for doing that. I'm interested in something like this mainly to monitor MPGs. With my Prius, if the on board computer is off by a few that's okay but on the Taco, 3 - 4 MPGs is a big difference

Yes it is a iPhone 4s. I'm using plx kiwi the wifi version. I'm sure there are better just this is the one I bought.

The dash command app has a lot of stuff you can tweek. Sometimes
it seems off but I don't belive it accounts for idle time. I really have not checked lately winter driving and idle time etc.
It was pretty close during the summer though.

Shouldn't have any issues. They are all pretty much the same, just different sizes and prices. As long as it has wifi you'll be good to go.

Could be just a quirk but I bought my future son in law one of the cheaper obd readers and it melted in his obd plug. It was in a Chevy could have been the problem!!!
I looked in my Amazon history and it was a slimvalley elm 327 obd II reader.
