Are we blinding people or merely lighting them up?

Depends. On what it is you're talking about. Brightness is measured in lux (I believe). Lumens is pretty much the actual raw output. And can be affected by a number of factors. If we're talking about an led aux light, then it's probably not THAT bright as far as output goes. But enough to where it WILL be too much for other drivers. Seeing as they are designed for off road use only anyways. Any aux lights will pretty much be blinding as they are design for a radius type dispersal of light, meaning light shines everywhere within the parameters of the reflector design.

If it's something like a hid light in a headlight housing, used properly in a projector, then glare/blindness wouldn't be a factor at all because of the reflector/projector design, and the light doesn't project above the cutoff..

So again, asuming it's an aux light you're talking about, it's gonna be blinding regardless.

if you mean reverse indicators, no. as any other light on the vehicle reverse indicators are regulated
for photometrics same as anything else. glare blinding other drivers is the problem

if you mean additional lights independently switched from the reverse light, an aux light... 3200 lumens is
fuggin bright and will light up a basketball court sized space dependent on height and reflector/lens assembly

reverse lights are mandated to alert other drivers that you are backing

there is no requirement they light things up to make you see better when backing

    and yes stock, blows goats

legally, aux lights with their own switch, work.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
illegally I run these 5watts in my taco and yaris,
they help a LOT and are not junk that dies in a few months

    Retro solutions

35 bucks a pair but well built and won't overdrive the volts (blow a fuse)

    no I mean aftermarket components

    which say on the box

this is the thing for you mang,
and otherwise look good, but over time they are always on the borderline of max current
and then one day you have hot cooked wiring, or are blowing fuses left and right

the stuff I posted a link to, doesn't dick with the electrical requirements for the reverse light power socket, guaranteed

been running on my yaris since 2010...no problems. on tacoma since 2013, no issues

not all aftermarket led thinga'ma'shits can be said to be as worry free, because there is a ton
of crap out there and a ton of good stuff, and not much way to tell the difference

For backup lights, I wouldn't worry about it being blinding to other drivers. Yes technically they are still meant for off road use. But you're only using them to back up. If it's a small pair of lights Then I'd say go for it. But keep in mind that if a cop is around, he may give you crap. Doubt it though. I plan to do this eventually. What you might do, is hook up a switch anyways (if you wanted to wire them to come on in reverse every time) to act as a kill switch only. That way if you're pulling out say at a gas station and a cop is there, you can hit the switch and deactivate them. I'm not even gonna worry about that myself. I'm gonna be installing a couple of 8" single row bars flush mounted in bumper. They are like 3440 Lumens each.
