Don't need one. I know the taco is light enough for a smaller one but I can get a 10k or 12k winch from my friend for the same price as a 9500 pound so thought I might as well do the bigger

When you are mired in mud, the lateral forces can far exceed the the weight of the vehicle.
It's easier to winch your truck up a tree off the ground, than it is to pull it out of a mud pit when you're really sunk...
    Read this: http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/Recovery/
Get the biggest winch you can afford that will fit!

They say to get at least 1.5 times the weight of the vehicle to lessen the stress on the motor. But getting a winch for 3x the vehicle weight is overkill, that's designed for a Super Duty. Plus who winches their truck up a f'n tree? :der: An 8500-9000 winch would be more than enough. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Or just get extra snatch blocks and straps and learn to do double or triple line pulls. Increase your winching capacity via mechanical leverage.

Assuming the mounting location is the same as the plate bumper, yes there is room. you'll either have to relocate the solenoid or remove a useless

IIRC The Expedition Overland Taco topped 7700 pounds fully loaded. It's pretty easy to get way above the stock curb weight of the vehicle with modifications and gear (7700 is really high, but obviously possible). There's also no such thing as "Too much winch", so if you can fit a 12k winch, why not?

Ehhh there's lots of reasons to get a bigger winch. Though the is trade offs...bigger means more weight and space is needed and usually slower line speeds.

But the advantages are there as well. A 8k rated winch actually only pulls 8k with either one layer on the spool or none (can't remember to be honest but want to say one layer is correct). So each layer after that has less pulling power. A short 20ft winch could mean you only actually have 6k of pulling power. Another thing is power draw. A 8k winch pulling at 6k might use 300amps (amps made up for example I don't have the true numbers). But a 12k pulling at the same 6k might only use 200amps. So you get less drain on your battery and the less power means less heat on the winch motor.

So there are advantages to using large winches. It's just all about trade offs. Larger cost more and if you are just a weekend guy who uses the winch once or twice a year...not worth it.

One key thing though is knowing how to winch properly. Knowing what you are doing with a 8k winch can be safer and easier than the guy doing a straight pull with a 12k. Learn about snatch blocks and pick up a extension and you can get some pretty nice and easy pulls.

Only reason I wanted a bigger winch in the first place is that my friend can get a few 10k or 12k warn's for pretty much the same price as the smaller ones. I do plan on doing a bigger alternator and some electrical upgrades. Maybe even a dual battery set up so pretty much covered there.

Thanks, Tyler, Satin and the rest of the @Pelfreybilt crew for the decals. The sliders have been great and I'm stoked for the rest of my armor to be completed.

Too poor to list anything interesting.
They're sending them out with their orders now that they made the new logos. They were depleting the old stock in order to make way for the new stuff.

But if you just want the stickers, koozies, etc, contact Satin.

Le sigh... Still waiting on my bumper for my 2016 :(

Not saying OMG where is it, I know they are struggling with life right now and family. I will wait patiently as long as I need to.

Almost done with the install, is the front supposed to be level? If I stick a level on the top flat part it's tilted down, but it's straight inline with the fender and headlight line, I tried to shim it level but then it wasn't in a straight line with the fender and headlight line, if that makes sense

IMO, it's better that it lines up with your body and fender lines. I doubt its supposed to be level anyways. Plus, you have no idea how "level" your truck actually is.

Hey with the plated front bumpers do any of you have this problem from the grill flexing on the lower paneling below the headlight and popping them off?
I find it this way on both sides whenever I drive somewhere...

Nope that plastic filler looks like it's not installed properly.

Don't even use a level. Measure distance between bumper and headlights/fenders. Adjust as needed.

Your bumper may be installed too high. There should be about 1/2"-3/4" clearance between the bumper and the grille/body panels. The bumper is mounted to the frame, and the body is on rubber bushings which allows it to flex. Could be that the body is moving juuuust enough to allow the grille to contact the bumper and pop those pieces out. If not, the retaining clips could be busted but if both are doing it, and they are fully seated, I'd look at bumper height.
