My 2001 Tacoma Prerunner, 3.4L, check engine light is on. Testor says Bank 1 sensor 1 is the problem. I can't find it. I am beginning to think it is the sensor just in front of the cat converter. Is that it? Thanks.

A 2001 3.4 liter v-6 should have cylinder #1 on the passenger side head in front by the radiator. When the code says bank 1 it means the cylinder head that has cylinder #1 in it. sensor 1 means the o2 sensor before the catalytic converter. Loki in the passenger side exhaust starting from the rear of the cylinder head and work your way back. The first sensor you come upon should be bank 1 sensor 1. Bank 2 is the driver's side. By the way, just because there is a code for the sensor does not always mean it is a bad sensor. There could be a vacuum leak on that cylinder head making the sensor READ lean or an injector dumping fuel making the sensor READ rich. Good luck with the repair.

Thanks guys. I finally got time to check mine. I downloaded the elec wiring FSM from this forum and it is for 2003, but almost identical I think. I thought the sensor you described was the heated sensor but this is the only sensor I have. Remember, it is a 2001. Nothing between cats and nothing on engine pipes but this one. So this has to be the bank 1, sensor 1. Checked the wiring and the colors are same as on the schematic. Disconnected it and the 2 black wires show open circuit, so it must have burned up. Going to order the $91 Denso 234-9001 from Amazon. CDN$ has it on Amazon for $149, so thanks for the tip.

Replaced chrome badges with Sockmonkey black badges, painted billet grill black, K&N cold air intake, my corner light turn signal circuit, Speedfreek traction bars, RAAMaudio BXT/Ensolite, Stereo: Kenwood KIV-701 USB/Bluetooth deck, 10" Pioneer shallow sub behind the rear seat, Infinity 6822cf 6x8 front and rear doors, Fosgate P400-2 (sub), US Acoustics USX-4065 (four main speakers)
I replaced the air/fuel sensor just a few weeks ago to get rid of a bank one sensor one code (specifically P0031 that indicates the heater element is bad in the sensor). There is a great write up on this here https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/how-to-replace-o2-sensors.194366/ His truck is a 2000 and he had two oxygen sensors (his looks just like my 2003.... two sensors). It was a pretty easy replacement. I think it took me longer to get the connector apart than it did to unbolt the sensor.
That is a good deal on the sensor, it was $99 U.S. when I bought it.

Got my replacement Denso this week and installed it yesterday. As mtucker said, easy replacement and getting connector apart was the hardest part. The check engine light is off and drove about 50 miles RT to Alabama softball game and light is still off so looks like it is a good fix. BTW, I found that I do have that second sensor(Bank 1, sensor2) waaay back just in front of the muffler. Thanks for all the info.

Removing this 10mm bolt and bracket from the trans really helped to unplug the sensor...
