rollup tonneau question

do you have to roll all the way up to the front or can you roll only part way?

still researching tonneaus and need something that can be opened all the way without having to take off, as I would not have a place to store the cover when it is off. I take it the trifold can only open 2/3s of the way right? Likewise, say if I had the cover on and went someplace where I need it off, then it would be no good to me if I take it off but can't get it home with me

Most vinyl rollup covers I am familiar with it is all or nothing.

 

if you get one with the velcro sides, u can roll them as far as u want but will need to find some way to attach a longer strap to hold them in place. I put some new clip straps on my cover, since the old ones used to fall between the cab and bed and I could not get them out. it won't be very secure at HW speeds but in a pinch, it might work.
not sure how the other roll up ones work which are similar to a shade.

Yes...the Trifold can be taken down 2/3's of the way - LIke this:


The next step, is to take it off completely. The soft folding covers are light and easy to carry around. Anytime I'm hauling stuff and needed to take it off completely, I've always had room in the bed to toss the cover in with all the other crap I'm hauling. When you remove it, it remains folded (as seen above).

 

A bit off topic -- I just installed a Lund Genesis cover on my truck. Finished product is nice, but I screamed and screamed, because the bolt shipped with the kit was the wrong one, and after it drove a hole into the trac-tiedown system, it snapped off. So, check your bolts first. But, the cover ain't too bad.

 

My retractable tonneau can be locked in place every 12 inches.

It's a TruckCovers USA retractable cover. I'm from the penninsula, San Mateo area.

 

I don't think so unless you find a way to clamp down the rolled part or it will be loose, free to roll/flap away.

 

Same for my Roll N Lock. Three positions about 12" apart. It locks the tailgate shut, and only needs about 7" of space at the front when fully retracted.

 

how much did the roll n lock cost? where did you get it?

Cost was $1200 installed. You can get it online for about $1100, but for $100 I left someone else install.

It's attached to the rail on the inside of the bed, so with the exception of the tailgate, there is no drilling. Downside is you lose the use of the rails for other purposes. That didn't matter to me, but it might to others.

So far I love it. My stuff is locked up, stays dry and I can still use my bed when I need it.

 

I have the access literider and I can onroll mine slightly since I have the velcro. For example..recently I needed it unrolled a few inches to slide some 8ft pieces of trim in the bed.

 

Question for Paul,

can you open the truckcovers without opening the tailgate?

likewise same question to slippy, can you open the roll n lock without opening the tailgate?

I still have not decided if I should go with a folding one or a retractible one. I'd like to see one in person before I buy one.

doughboy, you can open the truckovers without opening the tailgate. Also the instructions recommend the the tailgate be closed when you close it or it may damage the locking mechanism. Let me know if you ever come up to the penninsula I'd be happy to show you the cover. I had to see one in person before I bought it too.

I did spot a tacoma at the office parking lot with the truckcovers tonneau. I have to track down the owner (maybe leave a post it note).

anyway, I was wondering if the rails can still be used? I assume the front ones are not accessible anymore. The install of the tonneau is permanent right?

one of the reason I got the truck is to transport bikes, and just found this picture. it's a $10 bike mount bolted onto the rail.


I don't know if the mount is attached to the side will work or not.

You're right you do lose access to the front rails. The instructions actually tell you to take it off I didn't so some water was passing through that area. I'm going have to remove them one of these days. Install is not permanent but looks a little difficult to remove. The sides just bolts into the rails and the box just sits on top of the edge of the bed.

I plan on putting bikes on my truck too but I have a hitch rack from my old car to haul bikes. So I didn't mind losing the front rail.

 

I mount bikes in my bed just like that picture and I have the access literider rollup as I stated previously. I just had to put some washers on to space the mount a little further out since the tonneau kinda blocked the original mounting position.

Soon I will be doing a rack over the tonneau with crossbars so that I can have the cover closed and still be able to mount the bikes on top of it. Just trying to find something I can space the mounting pads up a little higher to allow the cover to roll up under the cross bars.
