Rods longer than the bed costing a few hundred dollars each (stupid fragile) really dislike being abused like that.

Fair enough. Come to think of it a locking rod holder would be sweet. I like to keep them out of sight.

Nope..doesn't move an inch..the rods apply downward pressure..plus the bed mat keeps it from sliding. Actually I drive around without any rods and it doesn't move.

I was thinking of a set up like that can you post better pictures please?

so far, what I did was buy a case from sports authority broke the rod up and stuck it in there inside the cab. it looks like a riffle carrying case here's a reff pic [IMG]. I was a bit curious and was able to fit to two 2-piece fishing rods with a spincast and spinning reel as well as a 4-piece rod with another spinning reel, however I only recommend 1 or 2 in the case.

I built these for my wife's Tahoe as breaking down flyrods to move only a mile or so is a pain in the keester. I'm going to get the factory roof racks with some type of padding to accomplish basically the same thing

I also fish a ton and have always had a small car and not able to car my rods. If you have a roof rack you may want to consider getting the older style ski rack attachment. I can carry 8 to 10 rods on the roof and with my rack everything locks.

I would post pictures of them on my previous car, but I am have complications adding photos

Get a portarod if you dont mind spending the money. They're really not all that expensive and they look and function much better than a lot of the do-it-yourself hardware store stuff that people are throwing together.

The only critique I would have with mine is that it doesn't handle large offshore rods very well. Works great for my light tackle inshore/trout setups, but doesnt hold offshore rods with penn internationals well.

@Chux mounted his rods on the front bumper. Not sure how practical that is for driving distances but it's definitely different
