Blah blah blah. You all forget, if they were as bad as you guys pretend they are, the 4runner line would've died long ago

They were selling like hot cakes when they came out, the big issues arose years later. My statement is an opinion based on April 27th, 2016

The early 3rd gens suck too in my opinion.

True. Still if they were so bad they wouldn't still have a following. Also out of everyone in here with a 2nd gen, only 3 are broken, and all 3 were not properly maintained. Can't speak for @Fenwick1993, but I know mines got 260k+ on the clock. Not the worst stats

Don't worry, I still have you beat on head gaskets. I blew the first set at 150k. The second set at 160k and 2 warped heads. And finally it started drinking coolant at 176k and I said fuck this motor. I started bouncing it off the rev limiter before every shift before it finally shot a rod out the side of the block.

No this was in San Diego a long time ago. I have 30k miles on the 1999 3.4l motor I had swapped in.
Supposedly the 1996-1998 are more likely to blow head gaskets

Hmm I wonder if its similar to the 2nd gens issue. Explains shy I see the newer 3rd gens more often. I'm kinda proud of mine though. I don't think it would've blown if I didn't try to go to AZ with it in that heat. Oh well. Too late now

The cold. Where I live in California it's colder than most of the state, which is part of why mine lasted for so long. San Diego doesn't get as hot as Arizona, but it still gets very hot, a lot hotter than the mountain parts of Colorado. No heat, no busted head gasket

That maybe true. But climbing these mountains will cause a lot of heat build up. We have long drawn out hills around here.

Mine drove up and down my mountain many times without issue. It was only after driving 170 miles through the desert that it got cooked

Don't know how i ended up lurking in the 4runner section...anyways, yes, i've got a DIY water filtration setup. Until I can figure out what kind of pump I want to use, it's a hand pump system. 25L raw/unfiltered reservoir, pre-filter attached to the end of the line, line goes through the cap, into a handpump backpacking filter, pumps it out into the back of another 25L container. I'll usually just fill the raw one from source when i set up camp and do the filtering as necessary. End game is to have a hose run from one of the other fittings on my raw tank and have the raw container be a vacuum with a pump on the clean side of it & I can pull right from source. If you have more questions and/or want pics just shoot me a PM.

I should also add that neither of them have blown head gaskets. I could easily get them running, they just wouldn't be quite up to my standards. They were ridden hard and not taken care of maintenance-wise.
