Remote starter question

I asked this question in a different forum and didn't get any help. I have a new 2106 tacoma sport double cab and couldent be happier. My question is when I start my truck with the dealer installed remote starter, I can't get into the truck without the engine shutting off. The remote uses the toyota key fob to start it. Not sure if it is a toyota product. I contacted the dealer before writing this but am still waiting for a response. My 2003 tundra remote starter did not do this. It seems like unnecessary wear on the starter and wakes the kids up at 5.00AM. Any input on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

 

I just picked up my new sport double cab. I had one installed as well that uses the Toyota fob (click the unlock button 3 times holding it on the last click) but I don't think it is a Toyota product if that makes sense. The dealer did tell me that when used, the engine shuts off once the door is open which I wasn't a fan of either. I don't know enough about it as to why this happens. I know Toyota doesn't offer any remote starts on new tacomas straight from the factory. I'm guessing that's part of the reason for this small nuisance.

 

get a viper system and you shouldnt have any problems

 

This may or may not be accurate. If you have the push-to-start system, even an aftermarket alarm (such as a viper) will shut the engine off when you open a door. The aftermarket systems clearly state "there is no takeover process; engine shuts off when door opens." Or at least every system I've looked at so far does. These are done this way because they don't replicate having the RFID key in the car else it will have a number of interface issues (much like how you can't lock the doors if you leave the RFID key in the car). Instead of replicating the RFID system, the after market remote start tells the ECU to initiate the remote start function, which is part of the OEM system and requires ignition shut down when a door opens (it sucks, but that's how the OEM system works for "safety" reasons).

However, if you have a keyed ignition, the aftermarket remote start should allow you to takeover without engine shutdown. This is mainly because the aftermarket system does mimic having a key in the ignition during remote start operation when you have a keyed ignition.

 

I don't believe there is a 'factory' remote starter, but a dealer add-on which uses the standard key fob.

The engine shutting off when opening door I read is just a safety by product. It's actually one of the reasons I decided not to get a dealer installed remote starter. Not sure if aftermarket ones can bypass this.

 

theres gotta be a way around that. my nissan altma has a keyless fob and it stays on when the door is opened. ill find a way. im waiting to hear back on a quote for a viper system

 

I would love to find a way around it, as I've been doing a ton of research. I have a viper 5706 on its way to my house as we type (having picked up my truck last week), with the DBALL interface module. I've done alarm and remote start installs for nearly 20 years, and while the frequency at which I perform them now is not what it was when I worked in the industry, I try to keep up with the ins and outs of development. From what I've ascertained, there is no aftermarket system that will allow a takeover if you have the push to start ignition on a toyota or lexus vehicle.

Read through the tacoma DEI (who make viper, python, clifford, and other brand alarms) interface installation instructions (found here) and it clearly states: "No takeover feature is available. The vehicle will shut down as soon as a door is opened."

 

I have the viper remote start installed on my 2011. If the hood gets raised while the remote start turned the truck on OR if you press the break pedal to shift into a different gear BEFORE THE KEY IS IN THE IGNITION AND TURNED TO "RUN"--- the engine turns off. But when I start the truck from inside the house on cold mornings, head outside, unlock and hop in, it stays on. I had bestbuy install it and they tried to take a few shortcuts which had me back the shop for a second time (i called them out on it and knew probably more about the system and wiring then they did, after doing my homework, and I got them to make it act exactly how I wanted it to). The only thing I "lost" was the chirp noise when the truck was locked/unlocked which I was fine with. The lights still flash and stuff.

 

There is no takeover process for the button start 3rd gen. We've talked about it alot.
