according to the tour guide in SA the 2016 tacoma engines are crated from Japan. Somebody is misinformed (not saying it isn't the tour guide).

It seems like this would go against the logic of trying to avoid import duties on the engines. The main reason for building imports in the us is to avoid these fees. I have zero knowledge where they are actually built

You've been on the forum 3 weeks and you think you know everything about Toyotas?

I'm still on the forum that long because I was hoping that what ever issues that was happening on the 2nd gen would be fixed on the 3rd gen since I want to add a mid-sized pickup to my fleet. But no, the 3rd gen inherited issues from the 2nd gen and has more issues of its own.

It pisses me off off because I expected more from Toyota. Why does my 12 year old Land Cruiser still has a better fit and finish then the 2016 Tacoma? Hell why does my 8 year old FJ Cruiser have better fit and finish than a 2016 year old Tacoma?

Almost all new motors sound like like sewing machines. Engines now a days are a lot more high tech than 10-20 years ago. And even then there was guys bitching VVT-I motors and others we're "too high tech or hard" to work on. They are a lot more sophisticated now a days. With the EPA regulations they will only become more and more advanced and smaller over the next few years. This motor is a half a liter smaller than the previous gen motor and produces more HP and torque. Sure off the line it may struggle a little but it's also a little heavier than last gen also.

Also you say transmission issue. Understandable that some have been low on fluid, that's a a quality control issue, and the other problem is the computer controlling the shift points. There hasn't been one case of these transmissions having failure. More than likely their will be a software update that will fix/fine tune these issues some are having.

I agree but a stereo, key, plastic seat part, 4 cyl engine that still never had the case cracked are not the same. Slow is relative. I had 2 3..0L V6 engines in 90 & 95. None ever gave me a lick of trouble. Not even the dreaded head gasket. I thought those trucks were the best thing since slice bread.
I hope the OP gets the issue fixed too. I just feel c'mon one payment & its torn down? Suspect service visit? At the beginning TMC was taking trucks back that had major issues. A couple were reported here. Also you can't be on Toyota site without saying anything against Toyota? My impression it is to collaborate & converse on Toyota trucks. Having been an long time owner of Toyota trucks (my first was a new 87 4x4 4cyl 5 speed turbo 22RTE), my opinion is they are not built the same. 87, 89. 90, 95 were my absolute hands down favorite trucks. My 06 & 13 are OK considering I don't want to own a full size.
    Keep us posted OP.

Well, you're welcome to come to Huntsville and talk to the numerous people at the engine plant here who build the motor everyday, or you can believe "the tour guide" your call. lol

Maybe the tour guide should watch this.

    I stopped reading right there.

I've owned two Tacomas, a Corolla, a Scion and even a Paseo. Yea, I know something about Toyota.

I live in Huntsville, no need to come here, lol. Nowhere have you shown that the 3.5 version used in the 2016 Tacoma isn't 80% complete from Japan (maybe assembled the rest in HSV?). There are other Toyota 3.5 v6s also. Granted, all I have is a 2nd hand tour summary, but I will ask around. It doesn't seem 100% clear.

Then you should know that Toyota takes longer than 18 months to fix a serious issue if they even fix it all.

Again, if it's that deep for you and you're that unhappy, go get a chevy, then you can get on a chevy forum I guess.

At the exact moment your practically brand new engine is in pieces at the dealership, they should be giving you keys to a BRAND NEW Tacoma with all the same options.

    Especially since:
    1) You did nothing to the truck yourself. Literally not even an oil change.
    2) It's been weeks upon weeks now and they haven't truly discovered "the problem".

Toyota should haul that thing back to the lab for testing to figure out what the hell happened. Not leave it in the hands of tech's who haven't ever built the 3.5L engine.

Screw being patient! Don't sit there and let them throw parts at your truck. Do not take anything other than a brand new truck out of that dealership. OD should have <10 miles. Accept nothing else!!! We all know dealerships can be shady! If I had just thrown 40k at this vehicle, I would not be "patient".

Or I can keep raising concerns to potential buyers about the inferior quality of the 3rd Gen. The same buyers that are willing to accept the weak motor output and high price of the vehicle thinking they are going to get Toyota reliability when those days are in the past.

Dang...On a previous post I stated I test drove a 2016, 2.7 with A/T. As with most new cars I bought, it seems I'm always behind the curve on the new body style/next generation...Having a 2014 2.7 A/T, low miles (500) the dealer told me they would give me what I paid on the 2014, towards a 2016.....Well the test drive convinced me to stay put....That 2016 A/T kept shifting up & down like it couldn't decide what gear it needed to be in...When I confronted the dealer they said, I wasn't used to the 6 speed, as mine is a 4 speed....Anytime there was any resistance in road condition the transmission shifted to a lower speed then back up again.....I was told by one reader that I was basically full of canal water... but I know what I experienced.....

Welcome to the world of 6+ speed transmissions. Our 2014 Santa Fe with 6 speed did the same thing, it was annoying as hell. The five speed in my wife's 2015 Xterra Pro 4X is a dream and the 5 speed transmission in the 4Runner was a dream as well. I can't imagine what driving a car with an 8 speed automatic transmission would be like...a fucking nightmare I would assume. All in the name of a few MPGs, not worth it.....

Just because something is new & supposedly improved, does not make it better....My guess is wheels will always be round...Look out when that day changes !!
