Hi guys first post, joined after getting my first toy about a month ago.. i purchased a 2006 tacoma sport 4.0 4 door with 124,000 miles on it , was really exited about it paid 6 grand for it I thought it was a good deal. Drove real nice and smooth for 2 weeks till last Sunday I was going out for breakfast and the oil light came on, it broke down on the freeway I was able to make it back home at about 50MPh. turns out the oil pump went out on it, metal and aluminum shavings in the oil pan and the flywheel and crankshaft a bunch of play on it and the center of it all blue from getting so hot..
So anyways we found a new engine from a forerunner with 80,000 miles installed it and running smooth... about 20 miles after running it p0016 p0018 p0340 codes came up which are left and right cam positioning sensor and crankshaft positioning sensor.. come to find out the guy who did all the work for me told me that he had to use my original engine wiring harness because the the cam sensors on the new engin had a different connection and so my original cam sensors had to be swapped into the new engin also. I'm putting all new sensors on it now to see it that fixes it but just in case that dose not fix it dose anyone have any ideas on what it can be?

I was thinking the same. If you have a dual VVTI motor, it probably won't communicate properly with the ECU.

I'm not sure what year it is I got the vin number on the recipe. that should give me all the info I need right but how do I get that info off the vin? And if that's the problem what can be done? I just replaced all the cam and crankshaft sensors and still same codes...

If somehow you end up with Dual VVTi engine that would be awesome.
Not sure what can be done to make it work but with so many Toyota techs on this side I am sure somebody will help you. First thing first what year that 4runner engine is from ?

    Swapped Engine
Good afternoon, I have basically the same problem, my 2006 toy taco 4.0 engine was swapped out with a salvage yard engine. The code it pops up is a P0340 and the wiring harness for my truck is definitely different 3wire, than the wiring harness on the new motor sensor 2wire, for the cam sensor have tried both different options, light still comes on. The salvage yard gave me a Vin, but I have my doubts about whether or not it's accurate because, when I got the motor they had remove the motor identification number. I believe to disguise the actual vehicle it came from. Is there any solution to this problem, that you have been able to come up with? Thank you very much
