1st gen Prerunner conversion using 4Runner parts?

I'm pretty new here, and it looks like everyone gets butt hurt when a new thread is started about a topic which already has many threads about it, but I'm going to do it anyways as I haven't found a definite answer to my question.

I'm in the process of converting my 99 Prerunner to 5 speed 4x4. Original idea right?

Well I've stumbled across a 1996 4Runnerthat's relatively close that has all the parts I'd need to do said conversion for $850. I've read somewhere on one of the many forums that 3rd gen 4runner parts transfer over to 1st gen Tacomas such as my own.

Can anyone confirm this before I buy the 4Runner. Are there any parts that won't transfer over? I'd really appreciate the input. Also if anyone has any tips or tricks for this conversion feel free to share your wisdom. Thanks!

Did any 4 runners come as stick shifts? As for parts in general, they are pretty universal.

 

I believe after 2000, at least for 3rd gens, manual was discontinued.

 

Yes most of the parts will transfer. I did a 99 regular cab with a 4runner doner vehicle. The hardest part is the wiring harness. I used the 4runner harness and removed what was not needed, ie rear door controls, etc. But gained rear locker, ABS, auto trans, ADD, bucket seats, and center console. The 4runner dash fit, engine and trans I had to move the motor mounts (installed the 3.4). Seats needed a minor modification to work. Didn't have to modify the rear drive shaft. Very happy with the truck.

 

So after more searching I bought a Tacoma frame with all the parts I need that was a lot closer, so I will be starting a new build thread.
