Sooooo close. Most the major stuff is done. Still have some things to button up. Filling up with nitrogen, touch up paint, wire in tail lights. OMG I love this thing! Can't wait to go 4x4 some mountains.

 

Do you plan on needing one? I only ask because I found that the tranny cooler I installed in my wife's suv was great for the summer and towing keeping below 200 degrees, but it also kept the transmission under 100 degrees in the winter on anything but long freeway trips. I feared condensation would not cook out of the fluid for weeks at a time and weaken the water based adhesives in the clutch material (gm 4l60e). I oppted to remove the cooler and just do a drain/fill from the pan each fall.

 

I did not bypass the radiator for precisely this reason.

Without the radiator to maintain some temp in the fluid, the fluid might be too cold in colder climes with harsher winters.

 

That's the only thing I'm worried about is winter time but plan on pulling @3800lbs total as many times as I can during the spring to fall time area.wonder if there's a way to make a bypass for winter but turn it on Durning the summer time? Great point though..

Right, the kit that I bought was designed to go in-line after the radiator. I figured with how little my trans temps ever get really high w/o the cooler, and how long and bitter UT winters can be, an annual refresh (approx 1/3) on the fluid fit my needs better.

But, that is a Chevy running Dex vi, this is a Toyota forum. The only point I was trying to make is that if transmission temps never go above normal operating ranges anyway in a cold climate, money may be better spent keeping fresh fluid in the pan.

 

3800 lbs in over 80 degrees will definitely put some heat in your tranny. I did look at bypasses at one point. This unit looks promising:

I was only referring to my personal experience with my truck.

When I added a lift and larger tires, I put more and more load on the trans. First went to 32s and then 33s. I found the trans hunting for gears more and more. Each time the trans goes in and out of torque converter lockup, it generates more and more heat in the fluid. I can monitor this on my scangauge. All this is without towing.

 

Different needs. Family vehicle on stock tires vs off road rig on 33s. Makes sense why we have different stories.

Now, my Tacoma is a 5spd so this is a moot for my Toyota needs.

Set the power and ground distribution blocks.




Also mounted the spots. Still need to trim the drop brackets a bit more so they will push back another inch or so.

 

Its the OE hood. I wrapped it in vinyl and cut out vents. Vents were from Amazon or eBay maybe $20 for all. The larger ones are marine vents. I like it, gives a good look plus allows a lot more air flow and heat release from the engine bay.

 

How do you like the kayaks mounted like that? And what roof rack do you have them mounted on. Thinjing of doing those same mounts. Any effect on driving?

 

I love it so far. It's the thule roof rack setup. No problems with driving.

That's some good handywork, you should do a hood scoop and a top mount intercooler, that would be sweet!

 

Constructive criticisim time. Air flow for what? Stock air intake is in the pass fender, so unless you moved it like with a CAI or ram air intake you aren't getting any "extra" air.

And I've noticed in winter the snow melts fastest right in the center of the hood so that is where most of the heat is, not on the sides.
