Obviously if I can get away with cheaper option and it will fit, I'll buy the one from Home Depot.
If its not too much trouble, could you measure the distance between racks? Maybe at the furthest possible distance on the bed? You're really helping me out buddy
    :)

I use mine as a work truck during the week, engineering/environmental consulting. All sorts of soil/water/air screening & sampling equipment, though nothing over 300lbs, so I can't contribute helpful info.

The federal mileage rate really works in your favor when you're putting 7-9k miles/year to & from jobsites.
I highly recommend getting the utility package, saves a nice amount of money, and deletes the rear seats for more storage room.

I also work from my truck but like others not in the traditional sense. I work for a camp council and work at 3 different camps as well as off camp excursions. Some days I do maintenance work and am hauling a few hundred pounds of tools and parts. other times I am hauling canoe trailers with equipment in the bed. always have climbing gear and a trunk of clothes since I never know where I am sleeping that night.

My favorite thing about the Tacoma is its size and how easy it is to maneuver around camp and cities a like.

My bedracks are spaced 4'2" apart. Alone, they are not so good for anything over a 20' ladder. You could get them another 4" apart total, but it's not much of a difference. It is a fairly short span, and the limiting factor are the bedside rails. Although it is a 5' bed, the rails do not run all the way forward/aft. I was in the same dilemma as you are. I had four choices: Tracrac or Dewalt rack w/cantilever, (1)Thule bedrack w/ (1)Thule cabrack (popular here among surfers and paddlers), modified Tracrac or Thule to work w/ oem rack, or custom welded rack. I did not do the cab rack/ bed rack combo because I've seen a few single cab racks start to bow from weight, and I didn't go full welded because of the weight of the complete rack (full 2" box steel). The setup I have has 4 points of support spread among ~9 ft. I'm not sure how much length the cantilever adds, as I have never owned or measured one. I think? a 28' ladder would be 16' collapsed? I would want to have the widest span I could to haul that around.

Alright so what I'm going to do is space the trac rac that I have on my f150 at about 4'6" and see how my ladder balances. I have a six foot bed now and I have the ladder up to the second to last rung on the rear post with no issues in six years. I'm guessing if I bring it back a couple rungs, it would balance ok but this gives me a good test to do.I'll have to check the racks you mentioned too. I really want something that can be removed by unbolting too so no go on a welded unit. Very good info sir!

Looks great. Curious how much you cut off the front and rears height wise? I cut 3" off the front and 4" off the rear but it looks like you may have gone a little more.

I think is was about 3 1/2" total taken off. I started with 3 1/4" and went from there to get it just about level with the roof racks. I used an angle grinder with a metal cut blade, then a metal grinding blade

I have a small lawn business I operate on my days off. I tow a 6x8 trailer with a commercial ZTR and 21 trim mower as well as all the other equipment and my truck does fine. I would probably even buy my truck for a work truck if all I did was full time lawn care... It does everything I need a truck to do and it's easy to get around and it's not an extremely expensive truck.

The back sits slightly higher with the rake. Depending on how low profile you want your rack you would need to take that into consideration so the load doesn't contact the cab.

    Thats why I'm here
Hi all! I am now working out of my truck, but I can not find a ladder rack that will fit my needs. I have the i4 base taco with 5ft bed. What I need is a rack that can extend over the cab as the ladders I am hauling are large ladders (up to 36ft). Could any of you send me in the right direction? If need be, I can do a bed rack then a roof rack...but, again, I have no idea where to go.
