They are recent pics. The clutch is 3 years old. It got burned out when they replaced the master and slave and it wasn't adjusted correctly and it was burning in 3rd gear since it was the only gear I could get into. They didn't air it or adjust it right or something is my guess. .

If the clutch fits backwards in the Tacoma , something I have never ever tried , Have a close look at the pressure plate and you will see that there is no deep scoring that would accumulate with rivets digging into the metal .
We need the picture of the flywheel to confirm the clutch was installed backwards .
As the clutch disc wears down , the clutch disc would eventually hit the bolts holding the flywheel to the crankshaft . There is no evidence of this in the pictures .
If the OP doesnt have warranty , he is on the hook for a new clutch regardless of whether or not it was installed backwards
We still dont know how long the warranty period was for the clutch ?
We dont know who supplied the clutch ?
At this point in time , I agree that the clutch was installed correctly

I would be interested in the flywheel pic. I take back what I said about it not being installed backwards. It might have been.
Having to drive it in third would have done the trick. I wouldnt have left the shop if I couldnt get my truck to shift. Them saying that the clutch was backwards is just them trying to pass the buck.

How old are v ninja? It might be a live and learn experience for you. Its bs, mechanics are shady at best. I do most of the work on my own cars and motorcycles. I want people to treat my stuff like it was theirs, this usually isnt the case.

btw, how did you pay for the service? I always use a credit card for this stuff. Visa/mastercard guarantee this stuff and you can dispute it. I just got my 80$ for a half ass alignment. Was a ten min phone call and no big deal.

If had been on backwards, you would have known something was wrong the first time you used the clutch. It appears the clutch just wore down to the metal. Whether that's a faulty clutch, a rough flywheel, or hard use is hard to say.

This was my opinion as well but that was before i was told these clutches could be installed backwards
    Maybe @Torspd can chime in?
Is it true that the OP could only get 3rd gear after the installation of a new master and slave ?

Thats the thing. The mechanic wouldn't show me the flywheel and I find it suspicious. They tried to prove that by looking at the clutch as it is its obvious that it was backwards the flywheel. And I don't agree with what they're saying. I'm saying it was installed properly and it only was burned out because they didn't adjust the hydraulics properly to begin with as they didn't have the right part on. And the clutch when it was installed 3 years ago only had a year warranty so theres that. But Firestone won't admit into they installed the hydraulics wrong but I know they did since my truck didn't run after they did the hydraulics.

But you drove the truck knowing you could only get 3rd gear after they fixed the hydraulics ?
This is where the clutch got cooked
In my opinion , you need to fight the guys who installed and bled the hydraulic components .
You may have a case here my friend . Make them buy you a new clutch

It's been many years since I've changed a clutch, so I'm going off old memory here. As I remember it, there is a flat side of the clutch that goes against the flywheel. The other side that is not flat goes against the pressure plate. I'm sure you could install it backwards, but you should know it as soon as you tried to use it. Maybe this clutch is different?

I cant think of a good reason for them to refuse to show you the flywheel. For them to give you back the clutch but not the flywheel is extremely fishy. Take it back its your property. What is the current state of your truck OP? Do they still have it at the shop?

If the pictures are new , he has already pulled the transmission at home and is now trying to rectify the situation . Problem at hand for the OP , are the correct hydraulic components installed after he gets his new clutch installed.
Pop your flywheel off and get it turned down at a machine shop
Listed at the bottom of this thread is the FSM for your truck

The clutch disc should have identical friction material on both sides. One side is beat up but the material is intact. The other side with the pronounced rivets must be altered. There is no way you can wear down all the friction material without wearing down the rivets as well. Maybe its the angle of the picture and maybe a side view will help my judgement but this whole situation seems real fishy.

Edit: looked at the pics again.. The rivets are casting a shadow..

The side with the rivets protruding just appears to have the pad material worn away. I've seen brake pads look like this once the material is worn down to the rivets. The friction on the rivets cause what's left of the pad to break off, appearing as though there is no pad material at all on that side.

:angrygirl: Not likely. Most clutch discs can only be installed one way. One side of the clutch disc has the center hub protruding further than the other side , that side as a rule will face the pressure plate. If it is installed backwards the hub will be pinched against the fly wheel even while the clutch pedal is pushed in disengaging the clutch. In a nut shell if the clutch disc had been installed backwards the clutch would not have been able to disengage right from the get go and you would not have driven it even 1 block. Most likely a poor quality clutch disc or poor driving habits.

In my experience the clutch disc wears faster on the pressure plate side. In OP's pics the pressure plate surface looks normal. Something was definitely wrong on the flywheel side.

Yeah. I bet it was pretty worn away by the look of the clutch. It should have grooves worn into it where the rivets are. As to what caused it? I just don't think whatever did it was a backward installed clutch that worked fine for 3 years.

Most likely we will never know nor will the OP

If after the Master and Slave were installed it should have never left the parking lot if it did not go in gear .

How did they not test drive it or get it outside??

Then maybe the OP just had to have the truck then and there I can`t say nothing personal .

Then you drove the Truck in third gear only for how long ??

Even a few miles most likely would have burnt the clutch beyond saving the smell has to still be in the cab.

Now the truck most likely has a cheap Chinese clutch

That's what I was wondering also.

If the master and slave were not done properly (adjustments, low fluid, wrong parts, etc), it should have been noticeable right away. Or at least within the first few days of driving. Right?

back in the day, it use to be if you put the disc it backwards, you couldn't depress the clutch pedal in all the way,,,, ask me how I know, lessoned learned from the 60's.

the op said they "resurfaced" the flywheel, so there would be nothing to show you since it wasn't replaced, it was resurfaced. unless they took pictures of it first, I don't know how they can show you what it looked like now

that said, im not familiar with clutches or how thick flywheel clutch disks are and the wear limits on them, but by the look of the clutch plate it "seams" like it would be time for a new one rather then resurfacing something I "suspect" was gouged up badly.

if it were me, I couldn't sleep well at night without pulling it all apart again and physically confirming with my own eyes that the flywheel disk is smooth and true, and everything is installed and adjusted correctly, otherwise you'll be doing this all over again before long
