Secondary air filter removal, K&N drop in, Removed front mud flaps, Toyota all weather matts, skid plate, bug guard. Bilstein 5100's all around fronts set at 2.5", OME add a leaf, Goodyear Wrangler Authority 265/70/17, stubby 6.5" antenna, smoked tail lights, blacked out badges.

The 1GR-FE is the 4.0 L (3956 cc) version, designed for longitudinal mounting in RWD and 4WD pickup applications. It has a 94 mm bore and a stroke of 95 mm. Output is 236 hp (176 kW) at 5200 rpm with 266 lb·ft (361 N·m) of torque at 4000 rpm on 87 octane, and 239 hp (178 kW) at 5200 rpm with 278 lb·ft (377 N·m) at 3700 rpm on 91 octane. This engine features Toyota's VVT-i, variable valve timing system on the intake cam and a compression ratio of 10.0:1. Service weight, including fluids, is 166 kg (366 lb).

According to Toyota it's a 3hp 12lb of torque differance. It's not much but it proves my point. Octane rating effects the power output of this engine.

You could also re-gear and you'll get more low end kick (more leverage, not more HP).

No they didn't. Not a "real" difference. They may have made it feel different or you may be driving it harder 'cause it sounds different but they did not make a meaningful increase to power or torque.

    4 horse power? Seriously?

No. It doesn't work that way.

    Exactly.

Weird because the URD NA package with a tuner gets you 50 rwhp. So it does work that way. I would put money down that intake/headers/y pipe/exhaust with just the maf calibrator would net over 20hp.

Yes a completely replaced intake, exhaust, fuel increase and high octane fuel will net you about an 8% increase in horsepower. I would bet that it would net you a 10-20% decrease in fuel economy.

Additionally the new found HP would only show up at about 3500rpm and above. Someplace that the typical 4x4 spends a lot of time.

Wrong. And No shit sherlock, you're not gonna make much power at low RPMs, if someone's looking for a power upgrade, I doubt they're gonna be putting along at 2k rpms and hoping to be a racecar.

Before anyone has a shit fit the performance headers DO gain HP on the Tacoma but more importantly you gain more torque down low. Headers change the exhaust pulse and back pressure to the engine which nets a bit more power down low on most of the Tacoma designs. Some do go for high end power though so do your research. Not to mention that every long tube setup on a Tacoma eliminates the front cats. All of that gains you a bit of power. Don't believe it? Hop in a truck that has had it done. It definitely makes a change OR. Not nearly as much as the blower, and oh I actually own one of those and so does @VolcomTacoma, but it's a difference none the less. If I didn't have SC'd money I'd be putting on headers.

Who was the kid again that posted gains of 35 HP on the 4 banger with just LCE headers and a Flowmaster exhaust @VolcomTacoma? Maybe that link would help convince a few who have never put either a S/C or headers on their truck.

Wikipedia? Really? Just FYI those numbers come from the FJ cruiser factory manual in 2007ish IIRC. They weren't pulled from the Tacoma. Different programming on each engine/truck combo via the ECU. I'm not sure how much the Tacoma ECU can adjust the timing for 91 octane. If you were going to try to make an argument maybe you'd talk about engine timing but I see you choose the wiki route instead. Honestly, unless an ECU can detect, recognize, and adapt for 91, the power gains are within the margin of error. You certainly would never want to recommend the change for a noticeable power increase.

If you don't believe me look it up. No Tacoma manual or sales guide ever claimed or advertised a HP rating on 91. A few early ones do suggest running 91 but none tie it to the numbers published for the Tacoma, just the FJ and 4Runner. If anything 91 was advertised for the Tacoma because of how rough the 1GR runs. It does not like 87 sometimes for some odd reason.

In either case it does not matter. You aren't going to notice anything but a slight increase in fuel economy and maybe a little smoother idle with Premium on an engine not tuned for premium. You'll actually lose mileage too if the gas station is served gas where Ethanol is used as the octane booster..

Yup. That's the guy. I remember folks would always pop into his forum and try to tell him he was wrong... right up until he posted the dyno graphs for everything he's ever done lol.

Yup. Still not dealing with the fact it doesn't help OP as it's not for a 2015 Tacoma?
