Hey guys, I just put 5w30 extended protection mobil 1 synthetic in my 2013 v6 auto that has 24k miles today. After a drive I noticed more pinging then usual under load around 1500-1700 rpm.

Yes I drained the oil pan, not the tranny.

    Oil level is good

    Used Toyota OEM filter.

Should I switch back to conventional, the noise makes me nervous.

The oil doesn't have anything to do with the engine pinging.

    Try a higher octane gasoline.

^ this go get some higher octane fuel maybe you got some bad gas and its coincidental with the oil change. Let's us know how that went.

That's what I thought. But it is the same tank of gas. I would have minimal pinging that you had to really listen for prior to the oil change. 10 mins after makong switch to synthetic and it's very noticeable under load. I have an appointment for the tsb reflash for spark knock on Saturday. If that doesn't work I'll try 93, but id rather not have to run 93 in my tacoma

Since the day I bought my truck, it was always noisy and made pinging noises almost like a diesel. My 2003 did the same exact thing and I have used Mobil 1 in all my Toyotas without issue. I would not lose sleep over it. I have used other brands of synthetic oil that made the engine run slightly quieter then Mobil 1 but really it almost imperceptible. Higher octane fuels will make it run smoother and quieter but the noises in most cases do not indicate an issue. As stated above oil will not cause pinging.

If you're buying ethanol blend(E10) and it has phase-seperated, you can't be sure of the octane.
Ethanol is basically used as an octane booster in blended gas. For 87, the octane of the gas in the blend is actually 84.
    Overblending is common as well.
    Just some food for thought.

I just noticed my 2014 pinging alot when the tranny up shifts too quick under light throttle at maybe 20-25mph. Higher octane fuel has made no difference. A heavier foot so the transmission doesn't upshift so fast seems to work best.

That is when I notice most noise as well. I have heard the ecu reflash tsb chanoes shift points. I'm just confused why my oil change made me notice more

Check into have the TSB performed. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/t-sb-0044-14-feedback-engine-ecm-reprogram-pinging.337705/page-2

One of the most challenging aspects of being a good mechanic is trying to diagnose a failure using customer feedback, then trying to determine if a certain change or event is what caused the failure. It's highly likely that your oil change had nothing to do with the pinging. Example: You changed your oil, the outside ambient air temperature was 80*F +, you were running basic unleaded fuel, and you're around 24,xxx miles. My truck started exhibiting the pinging noises around 30,000 miles & you're close to that @ 24,xxx.

Maybe the synthetic oil has smoothed out the engine, in return making the pinging more pronounced.

    Whut?

Smoothed out the engine? Does that even have a meaning?

Agreed . I think he's experiencing pinging, but it has nothing to do with the oil change. It just happened to start around when he changed the oil. What do you think?

Either way I'd recommend having the TSB performed if possible.

My 14 has pinged under a load going uphill and in low rpm higher gear since day 1. I have just lived with it or pulled it out of OD when in these situations.

My '13 started pinging after switching to synthetic as well. It doesn't make any sense but that is what happened. If you sift through the ping threads several people say it started or became noticeable after going synthetic. I got the reflash and it went away for the most part. I still hear it every once in a while.

I agree. He should get the TSB if applicable to his truck.

Appointment at 11 tomorrow, hopefully for this tsb and the needle bearing (barely noticeable, but wouldn't mind the "improved" part with new fluids.)

Ive seen to many post over the years of guys complaining of pinging after doing an oil change. Its gotta be more than a mere coincidence. Might have something to do with new oil boiling off and the vapors in the crankcase being drawn into the combustion camber via the PCV affecting the fuel burn.

I just can't see the link between switching to synthetic oil and pinging. My 4.0's OEM oil was changed at 1500 miles with M1 5w-30. Not a ping before or after the switch. Pining is related to ignition timing/fuel octane/fuel-air mixture/engine temps, etc. The oil has nothing to do with that.

Toyota states that a certain amount of ping is normal. But if you're getting hard ping under load during hot temps....it's time to bump that octane level up.

Not a ping here either with my 09 and synthetic. Seems to be more prevalant with later year models.
