I switched my 2015 PreRunner V6 from conventional 5W-30 to Mobil-1 5W-30 synthetic a month or so ago. My engine is not pinging. I use 87 octane gas.

    Mine's a '15. :notsure:

I'm wondering if some people are hearing some valve noise that might be confused with pinging. If the 1GR is anything....it's noisy, that's for sure. Also, octane levels can be a bit sketchy. That "minimum octane" rating of 87 is actually an average figured of 2 different tests....MON and RON. And although they say that's the minimum it could ever be....you know it's going to vary some....with some fuel hitting under that 87 mark.

That said...the ECU's knock-sensor should prevent any real damage from occurring...unless the octane is low enough that the ECU simply can not pull the timing back far enough.

The tsb was just performed, they are currently changing out my needle bearing in the front diff while I have a couple afternoon beverages at a brewpub down the street. I will report back soon.

And it may be coincidence as the Temps have been very high here in Florida and I have not had the truck in Florida summer yet paired with shitty fuel

Covered in stickers and chrome stick-ons for extra horse torques and foot powers. Icon sticker gets me tons of travel, dozens of milimeters.
Truck shouldn't ping at low/cold temps if everything is healthy. Mine was pinging pre-TSB if I confused the truck by accelerating to 1500-1700rpm and then backed off so it couldn't shift. The TSB should have fixed it as it solved my pinging even after I bumped up to 91.

The reflash worked so far. Maybe had to do with the emissions update the 2012 to 14 got. Just happy it's gone

I believe because syns are thinner, you hear more. Synthetics coat better but run thinner than conventional's. You may be hearing noise that's always been there but was masked by thicker oil. My engine has had the infamous Taco tick on and off for years but doesn't burn a drop of oil. I switched to synthetic after the first break in oil change.

I've been running synthetic for the last 21,000 miles and no pinging with 85, 87, or 91 octane (85 is regular here due to higher elevation).

Been running Mobil 1 since 5,000 miles have 85,000 miles now a light ping once in able moon running 93 October 9.5 psi of boost. All is good that is why you have a knock sensor!I like running startron enzyme fuel treatment no and then and 1/2 gt of Lucas oil stabiles.Engine has seen 6,200 rpm many a time.just keep a eye on it wouldn't hurt to put a bolted of dry gas in either. My thoughts....

I bought a 2013 Tacoma V6 that would ping and rattle unless I ran high octane fuel in it. I advised the Toyota folks in California and initially they suggested always running premium fuel. After about a year, they performed a TSB that corrected the pinging with regular fuel. Being frustrated, I traded it off and got the 2015 I now have. No pinging yet.

How many miles? It'll come eventually. Same powertrain and computer in the 2013 and 2015.

Do you guys have a TSB number? Mine doesn't ping but I'd like it for future reference just in case.

That's not how it works... Though on a high mileage engine it is possible for new synthetic oil to result in more blow-by, but crankcase vapors shouldn't cause early detonation.
This. It is possible for different oil to increase/decrease valve chatter.

Different oils/viscosities will affect valve noise
