Dangit. This thread has me second guessing. Initially I wanted a topper. Then over time I wanted a Bruteforce Fab bed cage. Now I'm loving these ideas of bed platforms under the toppers. LOL

Where do I put my Rotopax, HiLift, oversized spare, etc?

haha. I put @Pelfreybilt sliders on my truck. They make a great step to reach up high on the truck. :) But leveraging a 33" tire and wheel at the end of my reach doesn't sound like the greatest idea. Plus a tire on the roof isn't good aerodynamics.

Haha true, true. You mentioned initially wanting a topper and then a bed cage. I can say the thing I love about my topper is the sense of security. I took about 5 weeks off of work and traveled, living out of my truck or crashing on friend's couches in various cities along the way. I felt safe having all of my stuff in a locked camper versus out in the open. So depending on what you're planning on doing most of the time...whether it's just camping/off roading or if you're doing long road-trips including populous areas, I'd take that into consideration. I also thought about an RTT...but really it was just budget that kinda stopped me from that...eventually I'll probably get one though and then I can still enjoy the table/kitchen storage system from my build

Hard to say. I bought the truck saying I wouldn't be off-roading with it....

Yeah. Then TW happened. And a trip to Moab. LOL

I saw two people in Moab this year break their rear cab windows because their topper flexed enough to hit the window and break it. So that concerns me.

The bed cage would allow me to mount Rotopax, highlift, and tire up off the bed so I can still load crap in the bed. And do an RTT some day if I so desire - thus I can still camp. Though taking an RTT on and off isn't a 1 person job!! Really not sure what I'll do I guess.

Perhaps I'll do a different mod and continue thinking over the bed issue.

Haha damn that's intense about breaking the window. I guess I haven't done gnarly enough stuff to worry about that...then again my truck is stock on suspension and I haven't taken it "wheeling" I just use it to get to various camping/hiking destinations, many of which involve high clearance 4x4 roads and some decent obstacles, but nothing it has struggled too much with being stock. As it being my daily driver and my first vehicle that's actually worth anything, I've always been a little nervous about beating it up too much lol.

Also with the topper, the weight of the RTT becomes an issue. People say the weight ratings from the manufacturers are dynamic, not static, but who really knows...mine has a reinforced roof rated for 300lbs. So if that's dynamic that's fine...but if it's "static", then myself, my dog, the RTT, and a girl (if i'm dating or not at the time hahahaha) would far exceed that weight, even considering the weight distribution of an RTT.

What about doing a bestop and a rack? http://sosoffroadconcepts.com/bestop-bedrack/

I have a bestop with a platform and I love it. Bestops and softtoppers also won't be breaking any rear windows.

Mine is a multi-piece platform. I can take it all out within minutes. using a tri-fold foam mattress that also doubles as a bed for guests at home or when going car camping with a tent. The storage solution are 3 bins that have wheels, fit perfectly. Got those from Wallyworld.

Debating to wrap it in carpet or just leave it as is.

Wow this would be a great addition to my softopper. I have two blow up backpacking mattresses that I currently use but a platform would be nice. Only thing I would not like to travel with the coolers on top of it so id leave half on top of the other half to make room when driving until I'm ready to sleep. Thanks for the ideas. I'll update this thread when I come up with something 6tag_050616-172828.jpg

Love this thread. So many ideas. I would not be able to find this many ideas if I climbed up a 400,000 mile hill and stopped by a dollar general to "procure" some plastic storage bins.

Great Ideas here. What I'm not seeing are measurements which would make things easier for me being not mechanically inclined.

That's true. I could do that but things need to happen like a cap first. So I'd rather than just off building think about what I'm building first.

    Awesome ideas here.
My is an ever evolving process because of ideas on here.
I had to keep mine cheep and only used scrap materials I had onsite.
    1/4" sheet plywood, 2x10's 1x10, 3/4" plywood and screws.
The base frame has been in there for 3yrs and still supports anything i through on it for work.
I had 1000 lbs of concrete on it last week and it didnt even budge.
