Chasing down another post-lift issue...

I have (hopefully) solved the front cv failure issue I was having...

Now, I have a new audible problem. Searching only brings me to drive-line vib thread and I'm not sure that's what is going on here.

Between 30 to 40 mph I hear a what think is bearing noise coming from the rear-end.

It's there if I'm in 2wd or 4H (tested to make sure sound wasn't coming from the front and messing with me as sound travels)

The noise is there regardless of if I'm on the gas or just coasting.

No actual vibes felt until I get around 60mph, but I'm pretty sure that's a tire problem.

Is my pinion bearing going out? Only have a 1.5 AAL back there, didn' think the driveshaft angle would be significant enough to cause problem.

Thoughts?

 

Can you describe the noise you're hearing at all? I'm about to head into the dealer to see if they can diagnose my problem. It sounds EXACTLY like a squealing belt, but it's coming from the driveshaft. I already greased my U joints, but that didn't help. I'm almost positive some gunk got in the carrier bearing.

It only squeals above 15 mph or so, and is dependent on speed. It will make the same noise whether I'm coasting or in gear, and nothing if I'm revving the truck while stopped.

I was able to rule out wheel bearing as it doesn't change at all if I'm turning or rolling straight ahead.

 

Gotcha, no worries! Mine was most definitely caused by me off roading, not the lift at least. Hopefully they can resolve it under warranty.

What's yours sound like? Like a low pitched grinding? Something high pitched? Something you can't really hear but feel?

 

Mine is definitely audible. No vibes, can't feel anything strange. Low/mid pitch whine starts at 30mph and goes away completely at 40mph

Mine can either be caused by off-roading or the Lift... didn't have it before lift, but done a lot of off-roading since lift installed, cannot pin-point start of noise.

 

That's pretty odd. Yours may also be the carrier bearing, but it's just something else wrong with it. When's the last time you greased your driveline? You can buy a gun and grease for around $23. That was my first step.

 

I know it hasn't been greased in a while. I'll give that a try while I'm installing a carrier bearing drop kit. 19.99 from @HeadStrong Off-Road , figured that would be worth a try also.

Well... after listing to that video, I definitely don't have the same noise as @EatSleepTacos ... I'll try and post a video of what mine sounds like, but it is much lower frequency, may be hard to pickup

 

They weren't able to diagnose my noise so close to closing time, so I'm going to drop it off later when I get the chance. Hope you get it figured out!

 

Well, I think I solved my issue! Installed the OME carrier bearing drop and now I'm hearing just a small fraction of the noise I was getting and instead of getting loud bearing noise from 30 to 40 mph, I only hear it around 45 to 47 mph and it's not 1/10 as loud.

Final issue is getting that vibration at 60mph+ in steering wheel solved. Hopefully getting the tires balanced will fix it.
