I dont know how people say they do much offroading with 2wd trucks. ive drove around plenty of time in 2wd with diff locked and its useless on anything i would call an obstacle. and if its muddy/snowy your done for.

No snow here ;) and I've never had a problem with mud and I have street tires now. Its all about maintaining momentum.

Here's my current inspiration. This guy has an awesome-looking 2WD machine:

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/97-5lug-build.195038/

I'm not planning to go all out like that with the body lift, but lots of other stuff will get done. The previous owner of my truck already did a AAL, so I have a 1.5" functional lift in the back to get me started. By this fall I will have completed all of this (some already done):

    1. Clarion Stereo (installed)
    2. Roll-on Bedliner (80% installed, needs touch-ups and tailgate still not done)
    3. Additional 2" shackle lift in the back (purchased)
    4. 3" Fabtech lift spindles in the front (purchase pending this week)
    5. 30x9.5r15 tires (biggest tires possible on Fabtech lift) (purchased)
    6. Procomp 51 Series Offroad rims (purchased)

Additional Changes later, once the wife can be convinced?
    7. Towing kit (for towing a small trailer without the lame bumper hitch)
    8. Shock-lift for hood (only around $100 and just cool in general)
    9. Fender Flares (Fabtech lift kit and wider tires make for a wider stance, so flares help cover tires)
    10. Better Shocks (because ride comfort)
    11. Darker Tint (because Arizona heat)

I have a trd Prerunner and I can confirm sand and mud can be extremely difficult if not impossible at times. The locker works well on rocks though

Why do anything to it since you are wanting or thinking of selling.

I can't sell it now, and if I add mods then I definitely will not be selling it down the road

You can't even touch a 4wd tacoma for under 6.5k here unless you want someones beater with 50 dents, a spray bomb paint job, or 250k miles

Same here in AZ. Even older Tacomas with 200k miles go for $9k or more because you're basically guaranteed to not have rust. I decided on a 5-lug because I found one for $6k with only 107k miles with a pristine interior. Even with all the upgrades I'm doing, I'm getting used parts where I can, so I won't break $7k. And for that $7k I'll have a functional and cool-looking truck. No 4WD, but I don't really need it for what I do. I just wanted something that can haul furniture around town, tow a small trailer from time to time, and be fun to drive.

My parents bought it off the lot in 96 for my grandmother and it's still in great shape 20 years later. No rust anywhere.
