Not sure if removing the diff drop will help with the groaning noise tho. I just had clunks, no groaning/howling.

Fair point. I think my issue may be better solved with the ECGS bushing. Thanks for the link.

So I pulled the spacers on my diff, because why the hell not, and I swear my bearing hum is gone. Maybe it's some kind of placebo effect, but I'm optimistic.

Pulled mine today and re torqued everything, (nothing was loose) and the clunk went away, I might just be optimistic as well but will driving lots of gravel tomorrow at work so should be able to know for sure then. Thanks gentlemen!

So i assume i can't use the same bolts that are in there now if i remove the spacers, right? I dont think I have the OEM bolts so i would have to buy new ones. If i need new bolts do you guys know the specs of the bolts?

The dealership parts department should carry them. I was fortunate that a friend that installs lifts had some oem bolts laying around at his shop.

I used the same bolts, they're a bit long but I don't have anything rubbing. I still have a weird feeling in the steering wheel when I hit rough stuff, only really notice it at slow to medium speeds, not bad but feels kinda weird. I'm in Colorado now messing around to see how it acts.

It's hard to explain, just an almost loose feeling in steering, maybe just hitting the bump stops. It does t happen unless it's really rough like deep potholes in crusher rock. Doesn't happen over train tracks or speed bumps. I might try to mount a go pro under there to see, saw someone else do it to diagnose.

Just got back from the trip and on the trails I had lots of time to try and figure out what was making the steering feel weird. I listened to it while my wife was driving and nothing sounded bad or looked bad. I searched some more and found the issue for 2nd gen having the loose fit intermediate shaft and tried the zip tie shim trick. I've been driving rough roads and fields today and haven't had an issue yet. So I feel that taking the diff drop out cleared up the original noise, then noticed the feeling in the steering and it seemed to be cleared up by a cheap piece of zip tie. Granted mine is a 2nd gen and you didn't notice the steering. The diff drop removal might solve your noise problem.
