When you've got this many miles on your Tacoma, (2.7) what components would you start looking at inspecting/changing out, if any? I already replaced the timing chain.

Oil ? On a more serious note - how are the pulleys, serpentine belt, water by pass pipe, front wheel bearings, hoses, on and on. On the other hand if it ain't broke etc. etc.

Was the timing chain worn out?

Definetly keep an eye on your alternator if you havent changed it out already. I replaced mine @ 175k and it was still going strong but that is something that will leave you stranded if you arent careful

Yep, changed the bypass hose, and one of the front wheel bearing. Timing chain was a little loose.

    Upper and Lower Ball joints....

Are you 5 lug or 6 lug?

It's 5-lug. I have noticed the front end over bumps in the road to be rattly and noisy lately. Might be the ball joints. Alternator was replaced at around 200K. Truck uses around 1-1/2 quarts of oil between changes. But I figure that to be normal wear and tear usage for an engine with 250K..

Well since you are a 5 lug here's some other things to consider:

    Replace your PCV valve

    Replace your Differential Breather

Inspect your lower and upper control arms

Replace upper and lower ball joints

Inspect inner and outer Tie rods and replace as needed

Flush power steering fluid with new fluid

Inspect your brakes, especially your calipers and replace your brake fluid

    Replace your serpentine belt

    Change your gear oil

Check the battery with a DMM

Inspect vacuum lines for cracks...replace as needed

    Replace filters (engine, cabin etc)

Replace engine coolant (replace thermostat also)

These are all the things I would do. I have a Five Lug as well, and I post extended maintenance checklists from time to time on my Facebook group. If you are interested on joining PM me, we'd love to have you.

When did the by pass go ?? Which wheel bearing went - when ? One of your wheel bearings still working at 250K ? How about pulley bearings on the serpentine belt ? I'm at 100k so I'm very curious - thanks for your time and any reply - I got more questions but don't want to drive you nuts.

The passenger's side bearing just started whining at about 225K. When you get this replaced, you have to bring it to a machinist to have it pressed out. (BTW I am just gonna replace the other one when I get time, seems these should be changed together.

The bypass is originally made of what looks like fiberglass or some sort of plastic. Mine was leaking. The new one is aluminum. To replace it you have to take the intake manifold off.

I changed my timing chain recently. I think the mileage was at about 238K. There's a post with pics in this forum. It was a little loose, but it seemed like just normal wear and tear. Serpentine belt has been replaced. I got a new differential put in it for free when I bought it at around 135K, but it was not the differential, it was a bent driveshaft. Made the whole truck vibrate at around 65mph. Ask away. I am not an expert, just a mechanic who likes to do my own maintenance and repairs. It's a great little truck.

So I guess the 2012 v6 4x4 with 71k miles I'm going to look at this Saturday is practically brand new given your 250k miles. :)

Exactly why I bought a 2.7. I have a long commute to work and plan on keeping my truck for awhile. It is awesome reading other people's experiences like this.

"Ask away" U might B sorry. What mileage when the by pass started leaking - service mgr said hadn't seen them go bad but I read they do on TW ? You can buy wheel bearings good to go - just slap em in - 1st one was 2 hrs 2nd 1 1/4 and I didn't know what I was doing - I'll send U a link if interested. How about miles on shocks they suggest doing ?? Serpentine belt pulleys ?? Mine goes in for frame next week. They will do brake line - fluid - antifreeze - Freon - control arm - wheel alignment.

    @Chief1959

Out of curiosity, and since you are a mechanic, I'm curious what you do for oil changes....

Do you go by the manual for oil capacity, or the dipstick

I am not a mechanic but I've been doing oil changes since B 4 U were a glint in your daddies eye. I have a 2.7 so the oil filter goes in with the inlet up - I fill the filter - put it in and add 5.5 qts total - I think the book calls for 6 qts. Bottom line - use the stick the first time then after that just add what works 4 U. It's less then the book because there is oil left in the pan.

I actually just add 6 quarts every time and don't really look at the stick until after I drive it once. Dip stick has always been problematic, doesn't read well except after the truck has sat on level ground for about an hour. I change the oil when the "Maint Required" Light comes on. The By Pass line started leaking around 200K I think. Yea George if you could send me the link for the wheel bearings. Any of you had experience taking the bench seat out and installing buckets in a single cab? I want to do that soon. I just need to know where to get the seats. They seem hard to locate. Suggestions?

I used the Jersey Built since I live in Jersey - just found Blue Pit - Alabama been doing it awhile too. They came complete - no back and forth to a machine shop or parts store - just bang the old one off and torque the new one on.
