TRD OR AC 4x4 hesitation when pulling out in traffic on full accelleration

Why not have the truck connected to a Techstream and see what the computer has to say when you experience the issue .
Seems there are a few members here who are feeling the problem . One of you guys must have access to a Techstream
Press record on the Techstream when the lag occurs , go back to the shop and hack out the data .
Sampling occurred 8 times/second on the older ecm,s . I am sure its much quicker now .
Is your issue drive by wire throttle lag ?
Considering you are at a stop and punch the throttle , the truck should be in 1st gear with the torque converter in stall stage .
You should be able to spin the rear tires slightly at launch
I doubt its a transmission issue but better to be safe than sorry . It,s a completely computer controlled truck .
Your answers are going to be in the data stored by the Techstream

My wife's drive-by-wire Toyota V6 RAV4 Limited takes off like a rocket when you mat the throttle.

No hesitation whatsoever.

Possible it is traction control, but if that's the case there should be a light blinking in the dash to let you know it has engaged (every vehicle I've ever had with traction control flashed whenever the nanny stepped in)

I'm wondering if it could be associated with the Atkinson/Otto cycle transition as another member suggested.

Maybe the abrupt throttle input leaves it indecisive for a split second.

 

Oh, and I don't believe it's a traction control issue, as you can get the tires spinning pretty good before the dash lights up.

Yep, had the 2GR-FE RAV4 and can attest to the rocket like takeoff. Much better response than the Tacoma.

Edit: Yes, yes, I know the RAV is quite a bit lighter.. but it didn't hesitate AT ALL when stabbing the gas.

+1 with traction control doing its job. you can spin the tires with it off.

 

Mine is a completely uninformed opinion wrt a new taco; I've driven a whole bunch of them but I have actually never driven a slushbox taco. I have had this exact experience in other vehicles though. My reply is basically, welcome to 2016. All auto manufacturers are doing absolutely everything they can to improve fuel economy to comply with CAFE restrictions. One of the easiest tricks in the book is auto transmission programming. You mash the gas, and the tranny may as well shout back at you via the stereo system "whoa there cowboy, no way we get 22mpg with you driving like THAT... I'm gonna take that throttle input and slow it waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay down...".

This is how Toyota was able to eke out a small gain in efficiency in the "new" taco. Never mind they added 500lbs to the thing. Never mind they did nothing to improve aerodynamics (well, except that cheap plastic air dam under the massive new snout). They plopped a smaller displacement, slightly more stingy V6 in there, and they threw some electronic molasses in the new slushbox.

If it helps any new G3 owner (some super-sensitive folks here...), I drove an early model turbo BMW 335i (2008 ish) that was the absolute worst vehicle from a throttle response standpoint I have ever driven. It was not the turbo, it was the f****** transmission software. The only way to make it better was to change it to drive in "sport" mode, which had to be done every time you started the car up. Even then, as this was the first model with the turbo and the tranny was all new, it truly stunk. Not what any enthusiast expected from BMW, that's for sure, and now far better. NEVER buy a 1st model year; you are beta testing new products for automakers on your own dime!

Having said that, the programming can be either good or it can suck. Sounds like from the tons of stuff posted here about the new taco slushbox, Toyota absolutely pooched this right out of the box. The same thing goes for "gear hunting". On a really good slushbox (BTW, the latest 8 speeds in BMWs standard turbo 6 cyl are possibly the best slushies on the planet now), the transmission will hold the gear until just the right time, and shifting should be almost imperceptible.

Though we have to live in 2016, automakers can get this right if they put the time and $$$ into the product. Sounds to me like Toyota is not quite there yet.

 

My Silverado did exactly the same thing to me when i got it for at least 6 months. Maybe the transmission learned my technique or maybe I learned it's, but I felt 100% exactly the same way you did back then. I'm not trolling I promise.

 

While the auto trans may be adding it's own layer of "suck" to the responsiveness of the 3rd gen, I can tell you the laggy throttle is also present in the M/T trucks.

I'm pretty sure you are talking about the time it takes the truck to switch from the Atkinson cycle to Otto cycle then to register the need to drop into a lower gear from 1000 RPM cruising speed to ~3500 RPM and drop it into gear. So the difference over a regular auto would be the low rpm cruise it has to rev from and the switch from from atkinson to otto. Remember to switch cycles it also has to change from port injection running at ~8:1 compression to direct injection ~13:1 compression then when slamming on the peddle it does both port and direct injection.

 

Yeah, it sounds like reduced low-end torque from the "new" V6 combined with ham fisted tranny programming are both culprits here.

Ah well, the rest of the drivetrain ought to last forever with the reduced stress...

 

That's what I'm betting on. We all want superchargers and 500 ft/lbs of torque, but honestly, I'd like to have a truck that the transmission didn't crap itself 68,000 miles later when it was 4 years and 10 months old like a certain previous vehicle of mine that rhymed with Blebbie.

 

That's my recommendation, manual even says the same thing, use ECT for on ramps or merging into fast traffic.

 

My 2011 does the exact same thing... it's the tires spinning. I have had to learn to "feather" the throttle, 25% max until i'm above 30.

 

Oh yeah, fly by wire lag + tacoma atkinson cycle BS....many car reviewers also say the tacoma is a turd-o-mat off the line

 

Make sure the ATF fluid is not low. You won't be the first new 2016 that is a quart low on ATF! Does the engine rev but truck stays in neutral for a second or two then kicks into first gear?

 

Only time I see a lag is when in D mode and it's usually because I'm in a higher gear than the truck is ready to accelerate in.

Its only takes a second or so to kick down a gear or two and then the truck takes off.

Haven't tried lighting up the tires from a dead stop.
