I agree with this. If I'm rolling I'll start in 2nd, but if I'm not, I'll always resort to first. What's wild about this truck is you can get 1st when you're moving. This is only the second manual I've owned that has let me do that.

hey every 6MT operator i have a question for you, please.

the "Does your MT get stuck in gear?" thread currently had this posted from another user:

Manual transmission has a break on the clutch so when you release the clutch you sit there for a few seconds before the clutch releases. Automatic Vehicles it is called Hill assist, don't know what is called for a manual. Feels like it grabs high but isn't if you're at a stop on a hill and the truck will not move for a few seconds when the clutch is released
since my truck is on order and not received yet, i would like to know if there is ever any computerized interference messing with my control of the clutch, ever, at all. is there a nanny that ever changes your clutch control? i'm interested to know because my choice of vehicle is centered around my MT and clutch control. i've never heard anyone complain about this but i figure it's good to ask. thank you all.

No, nothing on this truck. I dont know what that user was referring to. It sounds like the hill assist function in some other MT vehicles that gives you a couple of seconds before you start rolling backwards, but that is not on the Tacoma.

EDIT: Apparently it is on this truck, but not on the Off Road model.

You can get some nasty rev hang though in this truck if you are too slow on the clutch, but rev hang is on any new MT car/truck because of emissions so you get used to it and how to minimize it.

I believe it is called Hill Assist. My manual 2010 Subaru Impreza had it as well. Takes a little getting used to but it has not interfered with my clutch at all. Definitely helps while on steep inclines off road. You don't roll back. After a couple seconds it will disengage.

?? The Tacoma doesn't have a hill assist feature for the manuals.

Not sure, but my manual Taco will hold for a few seconds on a hill. Did the same in my Subaru. Disengages after a few seconds.

That is really odd....clutch all the way in for me on any incline and I immediately start rolling. I am almost certain hill start assist is not a feature on the MT Tacomas. Maybe others can chime in then.

Yea, it holds for me. On a hill, clutch all the way in, let off brakes, and it holds for a few seconds. Not sure if it it standard or not, that's what happens. Did the same on my Subie. I was raised driving manuals back to my 86 Mazda 323. Never experienced it before the 2010 Subie. And now my Taco does the same thing.

From what I've read, only the TRD Off Road does NOT have the hill start assist feature, possibly due to having a different braking system.

I responded in the other thread but I'm putting it here as well. There is a hill holder clutch in the TRD Sport 6MT for sure, don't know about the SR, and not in the TRD OR. It's likely pretty unobtrusive, I've had hill hoilders in a couple of Subarus, either through electronic control of the parking brake or a hold pawl on the trans engaged by full clutch plus roll back, I can't speak to what method Toyota uses since I have an OR.

ahhh I see, didn't know that it was on the sport and possibly other trims but not on the OR

Mine has been solid. 7,300 miles on it and it hasn't ever been stuck in gear.

That is weird. For sure it's on the Sport. I just went to my driveway to test my brain and try it again. It holds 2-3 seconds.

I think is a pretty small percentage having the issue. I also thought there was tsb out for a fix but that might have been got the cps. See if I can find it. Cps issue was fixed on anything built after Feb our March I believe.

Yeah hill assist is not on the offroad. Just came back from stop and go traffic on mountain ranges and I can assure you i was rolling back every god damn time.

There are a couple of items here - 1) HILL HOLDER - My 2016 Sport with MT has it and it is very a very nice feature. In the Seattle area, with all of its hills, its a very nice feature. 2) STUCK IN GEAR - Early on my truck would get stuck in gear after a long drive. Toyota knows all about this and has a simple fix that resolved all of it. Now with 15,000 on the rig I'm even more convinced that the MT was the right choice...Especially when managing this rather unique engine that has all of its power in the top 1/2 of its RPM range. Tachometers in Automatics are just a decoration...In the MT they are necessary if you really want to get the most out of this high-winder. The engine is fantastic...but like driving a diesel, you have to keep an eye on the Revs for the most performance. Clay, K7CR

    Mostly stuff I built.
My OR doesn't have the hill start assist just like all the other TRD OR MT trucks.
As far as the getting stuck in gear I have had no issues with that at 12k and counting.

You bet shush boxes are for kids! Good thing that this all they know how to drive. I consider my MT as an ant-theft device! Clay, K7CR
