My 13 Sport has a squeak when I'm in reverse. It only has 45,000 miles on it so it is still under warranty. I took it in a month ago and they could not reproduce the squeak and said everything looked good. When I brought it home I greased the ujoints to see if this would help. It seemed to go away for the month but now its back. Anything else it could be? They said they checked the brakes and they look ok. Don't really trust that they are checking everything because they missed the bad wheel bearing on the drivers side that I just had replaced yesterday. Ujoints should be covered under the drivetrain warranty?

Now I noticed a vibration while I was pulling a trailer. Could this be related ?

    Yes, possibly time for ujoints.

Classic. Get the truck in the air and place it in reverse. I'd bet it's your U-joints. Mine did the exact same thing.

So pulling a trailer would cause vibration with bad u-joints? What are some other ways to check the u-joints? It doesn't always squeak in reverse and the dealer wont do anything unless they can create the problem.

Well if its not consistent then its probably not your U-joints or it is very early stages. How did you grease a non-greasable U-joint?
Does it do it fist thing in the morning, cold, hot or after changing from forward to reverse?

Maybe using the wrong terms. Applied grease to the zerks on the driveshaft.

You are saying it correctly. I have yet to see a factory truck with any serviceable parts. No grease zerks that is.

Could you post a picture of what you greased?

Lots have Zerk Fittings on the drive shaft. My 2012 Prerunner does. Bought new from the dealer.

Not sure if the first generation Tacomas have the same layout but if so that would be a nice touch. Myself I have non-servicable U-joints (Spicer Life series) from the factory. They have been replaced once so far and they hold up well no complaints.

When they failed the rear most U-joint squeaked in an odd manner I had never heard before. It was like squeak- squeak- squeak the entire time. It wasn't a continuous squeak like brakes make when worn but it was cyclic.

Is that because you have a 5 lug?

The Spicer Life series U-joints yes.

The greasable U-joints part I'm still in the woods about because I have been under a few second gens and have not seen the zerks. Maybe I didn't look hard enough though.

    For some reason I don't remember the double-carden U-joint either.:crapstorm:

Aha! They can easily be hidden. As far as I know though, they all have the same drive-line (6 lugs that is)

    Entirely possible no doubt there.

Now if I may say if the OP greased the U-joints and the squeak stopped chances are one of them may be bad.

After grease it did stop but now its back. It doesn't do it all the time. When I pulled the ATV last week it vibrated when I went over 45. It stopped when the trailer was empty. How much play should their be in the center support bearing?
