do the Tacoma headlights turn off after a few minutes if you turn off the truck but leave the lights on accidentally? (I.e. Prevent battery drain if key isn't in ignition)

Just bought my first Taco a few weeks ago. I found out by accident that mine do indeed turn off after a few minutes. Nice feature.

Now that you mention it, mine might too. I just know that I remembered leaving my lights on and when I went outside to turn them off, they were already off. I assumed they were on some sort of timer. I'll have to check it out tomorrow morning.

I guess it all depends on if your truck was running or not when you turned the lights on.

Running truck, turn lights on, they'll turn off when you turn off the truck

Truck off, turn on lights, they won't turn off

This is how my tacoma acts (with the keys out of course)

Not sure how it would act with the motor off but keys in the ignition.

Actually the lights turn on if you actually, and by complete accident, leave them off.

It's a preventative measure developed by the engineers at Toyota to cure stupid.

... and the opposite function is incorporated as well.

So, in response to your question... Yes.

Actually, not all Tacomas have the "auto" on feature. I know on mine, that lights are turned on manually, but will go off when truck is shut off and the door opens. When you get back in the truck and turn the key on, since the headlight switch is in the on position, the lights come back on.

I once accidently left my door open all night on my old 08 and the dome light shut itself off at some point during the night.

Sometimes in a hurry I crack open my door right before I turn off the ignition, in this case, my lights stay on (I have drained the battery this way more than once), I can turn off the lights by turning the switch, or turn the key back on, shut the door and do it in the proper order.
    '07 basic model.

Your 2022 will automatically turn the lights off if they were on with the engine running and then you turn the engine off.

It will warn you that they are on but they will turn off automatically after a few seconds. I have documented this. You can test it.

I have not documented what happens if you turn the engine off and THEN turn the lights on after the engine is off, I don’t think they will turn off automatically after that, that’s supposed to be a feature not a bug.
