Progressive aal retaining clip question

Icon didn't design anything, all of the 3 leaf AALs (Icon, ToyTec, Wheeler's/HeadStrong/etc) are all made by Deaver to the same spec and are identical.

I'll be a few hours before I can get a look at my buddies truck but I had no issues with the overload. Lot of people run the overload and it's recommended to be left if running heavy loads. So, either I didn't have the issue at all or I did and it caused no problems. Regularly carried 8-1100 lbs.

 

I agree that the overload combined is perrectly fine. Its that clamp the op is talkin about that has me wondering. You can see in his picture that the upper leaves are being pushed up because the cradle is sitting on the overload. Doesnt seem right to me.

I am in the same boat. Had 3leaf icon progressive aal installed. Then bought a camper shell and saw my lift gains decrease. In order to get my rake back I am too thinking of throwing factory overload leafs back in.

No problem. Made me think of your question about this when this thread popped up. Im curious about others setup with this as well. Maybe there were slighlty different leaf clamps over the years. I sent Deaver an email with the same question. Hopefully theyll have an answer. Id like to know if I can install the overload.

 

Sweet. Please update this thread with what they come back with. If this route is a no go, I am also thinking about air bags or a stout leaf pack. The ever so slight bro lean is getting on my nerves.

Yeah, the 3 leaf. They ride great, nice and smooth. I just noticed last week, I guess more of a creak than a squeak from the leafs. Its probably partially my fault. I meant to grease all the contact pads and completely forgot. Not sure if that would have helped or not.

I'm headed into the office now (kinda.. getting gas and breakfast) so I'll snap some pics in a bit.

 

Its hard telling who designed the first 3 leaf AAL, but it was likely Deaver. As far as who makes them, most are made by big leaf spring manufacturers and not Deaver. Icon's were at one point made by a spring company by the name of "Standans" (www.standens.com). The retainer clips were stamped with their name and also indicated made in Canada, which is where Standans is at. The leafs are actually not all the same too, each seem to have a slightly different design (length of leafs, thickness, clip location....). I've noticed this doing a side by side comparison of certain brands during an install.


As for the overload contacting the rivet head for the clip on the 3 leaf AAL, this is the case with I think all of them. Just keep in mind the 3 Leaf AAL was not originally designed to be used with the OL, even though they can be used together.

I ended up taking my overload leaf out because the rear was just too dang high.

Just got an email from Deaver, this is all they said.

You do not use the bottom overload with the mini pack it would defeat its purpose. Remove it and bolt up the mini pack in its place with the short end forward.

 

But 10% loss in capacity is significant, and nobody seems to have any issues leaving it in - touching or not.

That 10% figure is quoted from an Icon rep, BTW.

I had to do a quick turnaround at work so it'll be this afternoon before I can check the other truck.

 

Only thing I can think is that the pack is meant to lift and give a good ride at the expense of a lower load capacity. I dont know.

 

Wish I had pics of my old setup. I had a 3 leaf OEM pack though.

Maybe that is the difference, somehow.

 

That is so odd. How long ago did you install yours?

I have mine on for about 6 months now and they are silent. I did not grease any leafs either. I do hear yours making noise in the video

I just installed mine about 3 weeks ago. It was perfectly silent up until about last week. Mine isnt audible when driving, just when I get in or out with the engine off.
