Does any of you 3rd gen. Owners have this problem? It looks like it is embedded into the drain hole. I tried prying it with a flathead and it doesnt do anything.

Haha, mine is like that too. I just put the bolt back in and check for drips every now and then, there haven't been any.

I used to have this issue on my Tundra, I would take a larger flat head screwdriver and give a quick but deliberate tap and it would always free it. As long as its placed right you aren't hitting the pan at all and it really wouldnt take much force. Im sure you can reuse it but it's desgned to be replaced each time, at least if you go by the book.

It's just gonna be stuck on there like the dickens. It takes some pretty serious heat cycling!

Just like @cwilliams, I tapped mine off gently with a screwdriver and replaced it. It's not something you can pick off with finger-power, it's gonna need a gentle tap.

Ok. I will try it next time on my next oil change. Taking off the small round metal end to drain the oil first was a pain. It moved the whole filter with it, so I just ended up going that route and let all the oil splash down into the pan. At least the filter location is easy to get too after you take off the skid plate.

    I'm confused by this statement.

The OP has the 4 cyl engine, so what is this "small round metal end" that "moved the whole filter with it" that "let all the oil splash down into the pan"?

My wifes Rav is the same. I just use an old wood chisel, and give it a light tap, and off she comes. I think their cartridge oil filters suck balls though. I like the old style metal ones, and even better mount em up top like my subaru was!

Hope the picture will help. If you look on figure 1, that is what i meant by the round metal end cap. Figure 3 is removing the filter assembly. I apologize for the confusion.

Yes even my Honda uses the metal ones. Easier to use and take off. I guess the good thing about the cartridge is you can see if it caught any metal shavings

So you must have the V6 (I thought you had a 4 cyl because you replied in this 4 cyl thread).

I didn't think the V6 had an additional oil drain plug, other than what was on the cartridge drain, but I guess I am wrong.

Interesting. Apologies for the wrong thread. Does the 4 cyl. use the same style?

No, the 4 cyl still uses a canister oil filter, not a cartridge, and only has 1 oil drain plug.

Is it really true that you have 2 oil drain plugs?

One is for the oil filter itself, so when you remove the housing that is holding the cartridge inside, the oil doesnt come flying out everywhere like what happen to me, but i knew that was going to happen because there is a youtube video on how to change the oil. I think the rubber seal for the oil filter drain plug was sealed tight, so i had a hard time removing it. The other is the oil pan for the rest of the oil.
