New Owner! Ideas for making back seat dog friendly?

Hello all!

I've had my 2014 Tacoma four days now (!!!), and I couldn't be more excited. Still doesn't seem real to me. I've just been doing a lot of staring.

I'm coming from a 2007 Jeep Commander, and I'm asking for some brainstorming help.

I'm usually bringing my dog with me on my adventures. In the Jeep, the backs of the 2nd-row seats were carpeted, so she had a good amount of grip while riding around with the seats folded down. The backs of the Taco's seats, however, are hard plastic. She slides around a lot, and I can tell she's stressed out back there.

Any ideas for some grip on the backs of those seats? I've thought about cutting up a yoga mat or shelf liner and lining the backs of the seats, but I'm not sure how to adhere it on there and I'm not sure how those would hold up. Obviously, I don't want to do anything that would be permanent/leave residue or pieces of material on the backs of the seats if I ever need to take it off.

Why not let her sit on the seats? Weathertech makes a rear seat cover that is doggo friendly.

I have the Double Cab model. I fold the back seats down, then place a 3' by 5' rubber backed rug on the seat backs.
It covers the seat backs fine and covers the storage areas, to keep dog from getting in there also.
No slipping or sliding.

 

I always just let my dogs sit on the seat and kept a heavy blanket tucked in, no issues. Had a Newfoundland and a Lab.

Easiest and cheapest way I found was to fold the seats down and bought a seat cover with rubber backing. She rides with me every day.

My dog has gotten quite used to the plastic. That plastic has also saved my seats more times than I can count now.

 

I invested in this from Duluth Trading. Prevents him from flying into the floorboard when I have to brake. Very durable.

Not to hijack, but I'd be interested in anyone's suggestion for protecting the back door panels as well. I have a little Boston and he likes to look out the window. I don't want his front paws scratching the hell out of the inside door panel.

Welcome to TW and great first post, your priorities are in order IMO!

Unbolt and pull the seats out.

Build a platform to store a Hi Lift jack and hunting guns underneath, bolt in platform where seat bolts are. Hinge the top and side panels for easy access.

Put down anti slip router pad (shelf liner) on top of plywood. Use waterproof bench cushion on top of the anti slip mat and tie down at both ends in the back.

Install sliders with zero degree offset to prevent damage from lateral slides into trees on icy trails and fill openings with expanded steel . And give the dog a step to jump into his platform.

Teach dog command: Load Up!



If you want to return to stock easy enough to take out and your seats will look like new when or if you ever decide to put them back in.

Works when the kids are old enough and out of the house on their own and your not running them or anyone else around anymore. A double cab would give the dog even more room. And storage for me. But of course increase turning radius off road. Owning Tollers I have learned over the years to lower my tolerance for dog hair. And red hair on my suit at work keeps the ladies guessing.

I have essentially the same thing in my double cab for my two dogs. I've had it for five years now and it still works great. I throw a couple of dog beds on top of it for long trips and they love it.

 

These hairy bastards don't get in my cab. LOL. I bought a cap for the bed instead.

 

My shepherd is a hair producing machine so I too bought him a cap. He also has a Tacoma bed mat for grip and a nice comfy Kong bed back there. He has it pretty good!!

I like the folding platform both for the dog towage, but also for general flat storage. Hmmmmm

 

Ditto on a topper. I can't stand hair in my vehicle. I bought a Bestop so I take the sides off too. To each their own...
