rumbling noise, like i have Mud-Terrains (but i dont)

my truck now makes a "roaring" noise. damn near the same sound you hear with aggressively treaded tires. i am running Michelin AT2 and the noise is kinda recent. it seems to be in sync with tire rotations. i stick my head out the window but hear nothing special. i cant really tell if it is front or rear.

what do wheel bearing sound like when they just start to go bad? i heard it describe more as a howling..dont know, never had some go bad before.

 

A tell tale sign for wheel bearings is if it gets quiet when taking a corner/bend in the road. Right turn gets quiet = right side bearing bad, etc.

 

My truck is pretty loud for my tires, IMO. I've heard many describe them as "super quiet," yet I hear everything. They wind up and wind down with my speed.

Have no issues that I know of.

 

X2. Just had my driver's side front wheel bearing replaced at 126k miles. Did exactly as @Fitz235 described. Turn the wheel a certain amount of degrees and the sound would go completely away. Straighten wheel up and sound returns.

There is a DIY on how to replace the bearing. Does require a few specialty tools but you can rent them from auto part stores like Autozone.

 

Do you rotate your tires? I let some AT tires on a old truck go 20K+ miles without a rotation. They had a bad roar.

 

I do rotate my tires myself every oil change (around 5000 - 6000k miles.)

I had new tires put on a few months backing thinking my old tires were howling due to wear but the sound remained the moment I got out of the tire shop and out on the road again. I knew then it was a wheel bearing issue.

 

Could also be needle bearing. Does it go away in 4wd

 

\not this. i tried the 4wd switch without change.

Just went through this in august, I'd bet money it's wheel bearings. For the poster who wanted to go hunting, just drive on them, they won't completely seize up immediately so you can fix them when you get back. I'd go the total assembly route through bama or one of the other members here, just unbolt and bolt new ones. I'd also do both sides, from what I read when mine were bad if 1 side is bad the other will soon folllow.

 

That noise could possibly scare the deer.

 

well. i seem to have gotten it fixed.

i had to change driver front wheel bearing and (surprisingly to me) the passenger REAR wheel bearing. the repair guy said it was the rear he was hearing. so did my wife..but i am deaf. i'd believe anyone.

i'm heading to the hunt spot Thursday. my cool friend waited for me.
