    curious what changes were made. if the weight of the vehicle hasnt changed much, and the rest of the suspension parts are more or less interchangeable the only difference i could see would be an effort to work with heavier front springs the 3rd gen comes with. but since so many swap springs with em... idk. variations from trim level and cab configuration are likely a bigger difference then from 2nd to 3rd gen tacoma.

    The oem coils on the 2016+ are stiffer and the 5100's needed to be re-valved for those coils.

    right but the majority of people swap coils also and which set of springs are they valving to? last i checked there were 14 front spring part numbers for the 3rd gen...

    All the 2016+ trucks are 1 inch taller than the 2 gens. I am not sure that each oem coil is that much different. I think they are creating a shock to work with all and give new lift numbers per notch.

    ok go to your local dealer and tell them you need new front springs. they certainly are not all the same. and to revalve to a random "heavier" spring doesnt make any sense... id be willing to bet a 16sr 4 cyl has a lower spring rate than a 15 trd sport v6.

    Was originally looking at the 5100's, went with the 6112 / 5160 combo.... much better... also more $$$.

    In sort the front 6112 shock body diameter is huge!!! I mean like 60 mm huge. looks like twice the diameter of the 5100, which of course equals more damping, smoother & better ride. Also the 6112's come with their own spring.

    The 5160's for the rear come with a reservoir, and thus more travel than 5100's, and better ride.

    Just Google / YouTube the 6112 & 5160, and take a look at the reviews... are they worth the extra $$$... that's totally up to you.

    Suspension 101 says pick the spring for the intended task, then select a damper to properly control the spring.

    5100's are nice stock shock replacements. The rage for them over the years is the various spring perch settings that allow one to create lift by adding preload to a stock spring.

    @geekhouse23, care to chime in?

    Lol. 5100's for the 2nd Gen are all the same. 5100 lift each model a little different. Pretty sure they are trying to do the same with the turd gen.
