Mine cost $25 ($12 for Toyota: union and breather, $10 for Lowes 16' tube, $3 Kragen/O'Reilly for hose clamps).

What is $100 Australian dollars now... a lot more than $25, I bet?

I believe those $100 breathers are nice, and i would buy them for A dedicated rig. But for my daily driver that might see 10% of it's life off road,I don't think so ;). Basically we just want to get our diff,s safe. The stock parts are just fine.

I lost track thousands of dollars ago.

From what I've read in OFF Road mags and seen on Extreme4X4 the stock breather is just a vent it doesn't filter out any contaminates for daily driving it's fine but if your taking your rig off road it's a good idea to relocate it and put a filter on. that's why I'm relocating mine to the engine bay with a filter instead of a breather. It will be free flowing with no chance of a vacuum. And the filter is washable and with a little spray of K&N oil I can rest assure my diff will not get contaminated.

There is a write up on there from a guy with an FJ that did something similar if I can find it I'll post it.

You know i thought about it but it's cheap insurance for your diff.

and a side note your truck is HUGE! you would need like three feet of water just to dunk your lugs ;)

Buy the way i voted for you in the 2nd gen poll sick truck man.

Yes, you have to actually go into deep water to have it get sucked into the differential through the axle seals. Is $25 and an hour of your time worth it to not ruin your rear differential? Toyota puts an extended breather on the front differential... seems to me if the front one needs it, so should the back?!

We went through this twice (going to Mision Santa Maria and then returning from Mision Santa Maria)...

the way i see it that breather is so low that if you get a hard rain and it starts flooding a little you can get water up in there. it really isnt that hard to do and its so worth it

i have really been wanting to find them all and get em up higher i know there is one somewhere on the top of the Tcase and idk where the automatic trans breather is. i saw a video once and it was quite informative but i think it was manual trans

With so many breather threads, I am loosing track of where something is said or a photo shown, so forgive me if I am repeating...

The rear breather is a spring loaded one way valve that lets hot gear gasses out as they expand beyond the pressure of that spring. Water does not get into the diff. through it. Water gets in at the axles, through the seals when the diff. is hot and you drop into cool water.

Installing a 2 way breather, up high on the end of a tube, allows hot gas to leave the differential and air back in, preventing a vacuum from occuring inside the diff. so nothing will be drawn in past the axle seals.

The front breathers are already up high, with 2 way breathers on top... We are using the same type breather as Toyota installs on the front differential.

Again, $25 in parts and an hour of your time... I posted photos of my entire install (link in my signature, below)... This is my third Tacoma, and this one was 5 mos. old when we went into water deeper than I ever have crossed before... After that trip, I had the oil change done and asked that they change the differential oil and they found dirt and water in it! After that, I did the mod.

Do LSD diffs run hotter than open diffs? If so, in theory, a rapid dunk in cold water may create a greater vacuum force to suck water around axle seals. Just curious! Somebody should do a study with an infrared heat gun/meter and do some comparisons especially in a demanding offroad environment with a lot of spinning and traction variations.

We (except '05-'08 Sport TRDs) have open differentials with the limited slip action produced by the brakes at the wheels instead of clutches inside the differentials.

A spinning/ slipping tire on a non-moving vehicle is a terrible thing to waste!

I just talked to toyota and the parts guy read in his book then went and double checked with a mech . He told me that the book and mech both told him that both rear and front diffs have one way valves on them. No need for any additional hoses or different valves !!!

Yeah and when you dip your hot diff in cold water it sucks it in the axle seals.

    THIS!!!

My Tacoma was only 6 months old when we crossed through deep water (in 2010).
Upon my return I had the rear diff oil checked... it was milky (water contaminated).

I performed the rear diff. breather mod, and never again has it become contaminated.

The front breather is a NORMAL, 2 way (true) breather, up high, near the battery.
The rear breather is NOT. It is a spring loaded vent that does not let air back in, to break any vacuum, created when you drop into water with a hot diff.

Once again reviving this thread, a few of you have mentioned the 2 way valve, but no one wrote a part number. Could someone help me out?
I bought this one, but it's a 1-way  when the post I read stated it was 2 way
