Today I reinstalled the frame wiring harnesses in the rear of the frame.
I also reinstalled the ABS pipe on the roof rack, secured to the new longer Yakima bars. I decided to "outboard" the pipe of the Yakima towers. So basically about 3" outwards from where it used to live. It looks a little different. I'll try go get a photo soon.

I decided to delay my front end work for 3-4 weeks, and order some more parts.

I ordered the following:

My rotors are messed up. They have lands and grooves in them; scored pretty bad. I'm not sure to the exact cause. I'm running Duralast Gold pads with factory rotors. I've heard the Duralast pads are pretty rough. I think that characteristic, combined with some grit getting inside the pads have caused the harm to the rotors.

You can see in this photo dated Nov. 2015, the scoring on the rotor, it's only gotten worse in the last 11 months.​

It's been on my mind for some time, and it's a safety issue. So going back to stock pads, and new stock rotors.

The new wheel bearing / hub assemblies, just because I want fresh components there, new wheel studs! I'm leaving the tie rod ends alone. They appear fine, so no sense messing with them.

Fresh lug nuts, because fresh threads on the new wheel studs, and they are fairly inexpensive.

It all adds up! However, when I'm done the front end will be set for a looooong time!

 

Good Call! It Sounds ilke the calipers are still good and don't need replacing. It's going to be Beauteous when it's all finished!

 

Where do you get your OEM stuff? Is it local?

 

Just a heads up, i had the same thing happen to a set of rotors/pads, replaced them thinking the parts store pads were the issue, I found out the hard way when a week later i had a 1/2" deep groove the width of the brake pad gouged out of my rotor where the Passenger caliper failed. then the driver side did the exact same thing a few days later. might look into a caliper rebuild since your in there

 

I use Toyota of el cajon for parts I need fast, or for misc bolts and nuts where shipping would make the purchase impractical.

The retail parts counter guys, Phil and Shawn have sold me parts into the hundreds. They used to be able to discount list prices on the spot, but a new manager created policy to stop that. They used to sell parts online too at great competitive prices, but corporate stepped in and stopped that too. When it was available, I'd do online order with instructions not to ship, and do local pickup. When it stopped, said something about selling out of domain / district, etc. It's kind of stupid cause other dealers are doing it with a vengeance. Because of that, I go online now.

Order online because it's cheaper and sometimes no sales tax. The pads and rotors i ordered thru toyota dealers in the Amazon marketplace.

Well shit that sucks. I dont know how to do that yet... I can inspect the calipers when they come off the spindle but I'll need to educate myself in what to look for, etc.

The main thing you want to check is the caliper slide pins are greased/clean/not gouged up and verify the little boots that seal them aren't torn.

The slide pins will cause the caliper to lock up and then you get uneven wear and other issues.

 

Crom, how are you enjoying your Toyo MT's? I'm thinking of getting a set in 285/75r17, but only concern is the weight, other than that they seem like really good tires.

Hows the road noise? How do they handle in rain?

Hi Crom, the new tranny oil is doing great... and with 1,700 miles of rugged Baja driving last month, not a hesitation in shifting and not a heat up on the gauges. Perfection and Baja Proven!


Calamajué Canyon... so tough they stopped running the Baja 1000 through it!

Not a problem for The Baja Extreme Toyotas!

Hey Nick,

I'm trying to make a decision on sliders. I like the clean and simple design of the stubbs kickout. It is hard to tell from your pics, does the "kickout" kick out enough to be used as a step for loading things onto the roof of a camper top? The KO on my SOS sliders was just about perfect for this, while the stubbs version seems to be much more tucked in. Appreciate any feedback.

Edit. There may be some difference in fitment between 1st and 2nd gens, but I would think it's probably close.

Sounds good. I've greased slide pins before, most recently with my car, got a bottle of special translucent blue grease. I know the booots around the piston you speak of... I'll be on the lookout during tear down.

I didn't know you could rebuild calipers... That's not something I've had to do yet. I'm hoping mine are still good.

They are great. Traction for days! Super tough. Made in Japan, very high quality construction.

I've been running them since August 2015.

Don't laugh, but I only remember driving in rain once on pavement street and interstate. No issues.

The tires are tough, they take off road abuse without chunking or ripping apart. I'm also not a tire spinner in the rocks kind of driver. I go 4LO and crawl my way thru.

I'd put the tread compound on the softer side as far as wear goes. I think this is great for really good grip in rocks and dirt, but not good for a DD.

Noise. Just like all tires they are quiet in the beginning and get louder as they wear. My cab is fully soundproofed and insulated against noise, so whatever noise they make doesn't bother me at all.

Weight. Unsprung weight especially, always hurts performance. Mine is tolerable. My tire wheel combo is 84 lbs.

I will buy the tires again.

When I purchased this the Stubbs Sliders in 2009 there were not a lot of options on the marketplace for the second gen trucks. I chose Stubbs because it was built stronger than the contemporary competition.

I've been extremely pleased with them and recommend them. I think they weighed 40 each, had them burned on when trunk was a month old.

I can stand anywhere on the slider and get access to the roof not just a kick out. I know some brand sliders are too close to the body of the truck, but not mine. Really happy with the final placement.

The kick out works great too. I've used it to pivot off a rocks for an exceptionally tight turns on a very narrow rocky shelf trail.

Very happy with mine.

I will also say that the Tacoma calipers are susceptible to water getting inside the calipers and causing issues. Mine died shortly after a trip through Shamokin and it's patented coal/pewp wooder. And I did take the t I me to hose out the truck afterwords

I ended up prepping as the sun went down, and finished priming after dinner last night. I used a 300 watt halogen work light to help me see.
