Manual Trans: Do All of Our Toyota Clutches Squeak?

I have a clutch pedal issue: the damn thing squeaks. I've had it replaced twice and it just started squeaking again today. This makes me nutty beyond words. I've read on this forum that this is likely a design flaw of the Toyota clutches, both 1st and 2nd Gen Tacomas, and I really want to know how common this problem is.

 

My clutch pedal squeaks when it is hot outside. Doesn't make a sound in cold weather.

 

I fixed my squeak, here is a link on how I did it. Have not heard it since. Hope it works for you.

 

Thanks. I tried that for six months, but the squeak always came back. Just tried it on my buddies '09 as well and the squeak also came back.

Edit: For what its worth, I was able to get one dealership to listen and they actually replaced the clutch pedal assembly. Afterwards, they showed me the parts and it was clear what was happening (wish I had pics). The cylinder push-rod has a plastic fitting that fits into the back of the plastic clutch pedal. For some reason (I'd guess friction), the push-rod turns and the "corners" of the plastic fitting are wedged into the recess of the clutch pedal, causing binding and squeaking. The fix described in some earlier posts typically addresses this squeak by un-wedging the fitting from the back of the pedal.... Until the next time the assembly turns and becomes wedged.

My old parts showed the wear on the fitting and the back of the pedal from this action.

Now I'm going to be asking myself whether I would have purchased a stick if I'd known about the squeak defect.

 

mine did when i first got it. but now it doesnt, i didnt "fix" it

 

Really? Is it that bad?

Mine is pretty minor, and I only notice it if my windows are down and I'm in a drive through. Not even sort of annoying enough to even want to take time to try to fix it. That's just me, though.

I have a friend with an Escort, a friend with an Escort ZX2, and another with a first gen Focus. Every single one has a squeeking brake pedal, so whenever they let off the brake pedal, it squeeks.

Just minor design flaws I guess...

 

mine creaks here an there. especially when its hot. doesnt bother me too much anymore. whats really pissing me off lately is the crickets in my fan!

 

No squeak at 2500mi

 

I've taken it in for a creeking / squeeky noise twice. I think they just greased it up both times, no clutch replacement yet, but it hasn't been an issue for over 10k km now

 

Over 15,000 on my 5 spd with no squeak yet. I probably just jinxed myself, damn it.

 

My '09 2.7 had a very irritating pedal squeak that was noticeable above 60F. With such a quiet cabin, noises like this stand out--especially while clutching in traffic.

Took it to the dealer 3 different times to have it addressed. First time they couldn't replicate the noise. Second time they adjusted the clutch play and managed to eliminate it. Squeak returned 2 days later. Third time I demonstrated the noise to the service writer, mechanic, and chief mechanic. All agreed that they could hear the clutch pedal squeak. Both the mechanic and lead mech. gave me facial gestures to indicate it was a waste of their time to diagnose.

Perhaps as a quick way to get me in&out the door, the mech. cited the clutch safety switch as the culprit, even removing it to prove his skills. Nope, I demonstrated the squeak was still there, even while he held the switch. Then the lead mech. tried to convince me that it was the other pedal switch (used for cruise disengagement). Nope, I demonstrated the squeak well past the switch release point. Finally they gave in and ordered a new clutch pedal +bushing assy. I told them that spraying WD-40 on the master cly rod eliminated the squeak, but they were convinced that the pedal was the cause.

Apparently the mech did something right, for when he reassembled the clutch pedal he swabbed grease everywhere, including the aforementioned rod to pedal interface. Never had to get the new clutch pedal installed. Squeak eliminated and sanity (in traffic) preserved.

 

They replaced the throwout bearing on my '09. It was defective according to toyota. It chirps when its hot now. The pedal also squeaks when its hot. I am going to take it back in for the chirping asap. This thing cost too much to sound like a POS.

 

Shit man, just throw some grease on it. My 98' squeaked. My 08' squeaked. Nothing some grease didn't take care of.

 

I had a squeeky pedal when it was hot out may-june 08...had the clutch pedal assembly replaced...(technically not tsb cuz it wasnt out for 08) and havnt heard a squeek since....includes all summber 2009

 

People are talking about two separate "squeak issues". One is the pedal box assembly, and the other is the throwout bearing /bell housing squeak. Two different places! Big, big difference.

My '09 has a clutch pedal squeak/creak. It's in the pedal box assembly. I took it to my friendly dealer who easily reproduced the squeak/creak. They said they'd goob it up with lube and try that, and if it didn't work, they'd replace my pedal box. The dealer was surprised to find that everything is made out of plastic now. Lube has worked for about 2,000 miles and the creak is back, but it's not squeaking!

 

My 97 squeaked and i just lived with it, my 07 is an auto so i don't have to worry about it now.

 

8500 miles on my 09 reg cab, and no squeaks yet.
