Currently installing my kit :) I connected everything without the harnesses to make sure everything is firing up. Being that our trucks do not have low beams acting as DRLs, is it OK to not use the relay harnesses?

Maybe. I've got a hylux ballast kit without a harness. Issue is the 15a HL - Lo fuse is blowing during the warmup cycle on occasion.

Each headlamp has a 10a fuse as well so the 15a seems like an added safety net, where 20a would be sufficient. I'm currently testing out using a 20a and so far so good. So long as we can keep the current draw during the warm up cycle under the fuse headroom, shouldn't need a relay.

On the other hand, the relay is a nice safety measure to ensure if the ballasts do draw too much because one is failing, you're not relying on the stock fuses to protect the stock harness....the relay will be the one at risk instead.

The reason for the relay is on start up there's a significant CURRENT draw, enough to start a fire possibly with smallish diameter wires. Reason for fuse blowing is HEAT. Probably good to stick with the fuse that was there stock and get relays. Specially if you're blowing a 10A fuse. Fuse size relates to wire diameter... just a word of caution...

    Whats a relay cost?

    Whats a new truck cost??

Always use a harness, they simplify things and protect your stock wiring.

Definitely worth $25 or whatever they cost.

Just to clarify, the 10a fuses for each harness seems sufficient. it's the lowered head room 15a total circuit that's insufficient where 20a is required. upping that should still be keeping draw allowances within wire tolerance.

20A fuse is for 12 gauge wire
15A fuse is for 14 gauge wire

Which size wire are used in this circuit?

Take a look at the size of the wire coming from the battery to the .. wait for it.... RELAY ... see how fat they are... the battery has +600amps at the press of a button. The relay protects your wires/vehicle and is a safety feature. Same deal for your lighting circuits.

Upping the size of your fuse is just the wrong way to do it and risky... will it work, sure probably but why chance it... ? The only risk is and electrical fire.

Murphy's law will come into play when yer off road at night.... turn truck off with all the lights on... turn truck back on with lights still all on.. pooof. stranded just sayin..

Thanks everyone! I went ahead and got the relay harnesses in. Worth the extra work to get them in for sure!

I'm doing the same, as even though I've not had a problem yet jumping up to the 20a and it seems to be a fix to the problem I was experiencing, even the highest price harness I could find was only 45 shipped from Diode Dynamics. That's worth the peace of mind.

Dragging this back up. Just received my Xenondepot HID kit. See posts that say no need for harness and others say yes. Xenondepot has stated harness "optional" and that the OEM wires are fine for the 35W kit?

    Are most running without?

If you want piece of mind go with the harness, that's what I did. If you want the fast/easy install go without the harness.

Harnesses were included in the kit...so no extra out of pocket. I like fast/easy...and don't want my truck to go up in flames.

I saw an install on here somewhere but searched and can't find it now. Where do you guys mount the ballasts. I read something about drilling and bolting to the inner fender. Hate it when u see something and say I have to remember that and then can't find it
