I bought a '17 DCSB 4x4 OR MT October 8th, and joined here yesterday - but lurked long enough to pick up a few acronyms ;)

So far I'm really liking the truck. I've only got a little over 1k on it but so far I have not had any real issues and only one or two minor annoyances (see questions later) that are really something I can probably just get used to if I can't fix.

    Obligatory new forum guy pic...

And now for the question... in two, maybe three parts:

    Part 1:
Does anyone know if the MT has a software dumbed down fly-by-wire throttle pedal or really heavy flywheel? When giving it a zing to rev match downshifts at sub-2k RPMs (like a 2-1 shift to make a turn across lanes where you are still moving in 2nd but want 1st to squirt across) it's like the throttle is disconnected it reacts so slowly. But, it's just fine in all other cases (really nice, even) - making me think it's a programming thing and not a flywheel that needs to spin up. If this is the case - are there hacks to fiddle with the fly-by-wire tuning?

    Part 2:
Is the clutch delay valve easily removable? I know mfgs like to install them to keep people from bitching about abruptness or maybe to protect the driveline from lash by hacks... but I like to be the final word on how quickly the clutch gets released.

    Part 3:
I have heard there is a detent issue with some of the manuals causing it to stick in gear. I do not have this issue - but - should I ask about a fix at my first service to ensure I don't or is this a non-issue really?

I have an Off-Road with the manual trans as well, picked mine up this past June. Loving mine and not one issue with it.
    In regards to your questions:
1.) I also found my throttle modulation was kind of slow like you mentioned, but it continued to improve as the miles accumulated. Maybe the ECU takes a bit to adapt to driving style or something, so give it time.
2.) I found the clutch also felt more predictable after break in distance so also give that a chance to bed in.
3.) My trans is smooth as silk, shifts perfectly, never sticks in or out of any gear and it sounds like yours works well too. I would leave it alone, it's a non-issue for our vehicles.

Welcome to TW! Please be warned: according to the Surgeon General, it has been proven that TacomaWorld is the leading cause of depleated bank accounts, maxed credit cards, second mortgages, and divorce.

That's a good looking truck and beautiful scenery in your picture. That's god's country.

IIRC, there are some TSB's floating around that might address your questions. Hopefully some knowledgeable 3rd Gen owners can welcome and help you!

    all tore up already
1: im not sure the cause but it does seem like a heavy flywheel, but i notice it mostly on 1-2 upshifts when the revs hang long. but my last car was a rotary mazda with a 9lbs flywheel so anything else feels slow to rev and heavy.
    2: no clue
3:eek:nly noticed an issue once. it was shifting from neutral to first from a dead stop. think the gears aligned perfectly and wouldnt allow them to mesh. now i always shift inot first while barely rolling

I like the "do nothing" approach :) I've got a hands-off rule for atleast the first 5k miles regardless because sometimes it's just a matter of getting used to a thing. If that thing also gets used to me and adapts in the meantime... cool!

And yeah - the trans shifts just fine - I was only asking because I saw more than one thread on the sticking detent deal and if it's a real eventuality rather than an interwebz-magnified non-issue I'd see about having it addressed before I need to. Otherwise I'm just going to keep racking up miles.

There is a TSB out for the problem, but hopefully it has been solved on the 2017's:

Isn't that the "Get Off My Lawn" rally cry of the Gen 1 & 2 stalwarts, folks who develop their own film and can tomatoes for winter because that is the way it's always been? :)

Back in my day, we just had cold seats in the winter, and if we wanted to go off road, we had to get out of the truck and lock the hubs ourself! It was a better time...

    Little bit of stuff.
I get the same things from my 06 manual, I just always thought it was attributed to the 245k that she's got under her belt. I've just gotten used to it and driven accordingly, although I never downshift into 1st like OP mentioned.
