Has anyone experienced a "change" in the tone dynamics and/or volume on the basic factory CD (not changer) unit? I've hearing good range and then it will flatten out and the volume seems to drop a bit and then it will pick back up. It's bugging me and I'm not sure what to make of this since it doesn't seem to do it all the time. Could this be a "known issue" and someone out there can advise the best way to address? - thanks in advance!

Are you sure the automatic volume control isn't on? I think it's call ASL(?). It will increase the volume at high speed and lower it at low speeds.

Thanks so much for the feedback, I'll ck out the ASL option but am a bit surprised that it would alter the tone to such a degree. Will report back with results.

Does the base single-CD radio even have ASL? I don't think so. Mine ('09) doesn't anyway. I have noticed the "tone" change you describe when listening to the radio (not CD or my iPod via the AUX input). It sounds more like the unit switching from stereo to mono to me. These radios are garbage... mine has terrible FM reception. HERE'S a 12-page thread of people complaining about defective base model radios. My original went bad the second day I owned the truck - and the replacement went bad within a couple of months. It's still intermittent, so I'm still using it - but the next replacement will be a decent aftermarket unit.

He did ask for it twice!! lol!

but yeah, If the volume comes down at a light, or stop sign I would think it to be the auto something limiter.

My 09" single disk has it.

For the record, 2010 basic radio/CD does have the ASL option and it was on. I turned this option off and have not noticed the tone or volume fluctuation. I appreciate the feedback! Now I'd like to figure out the deal on the sat radio: 1. why is it so high through the dealer option - is it somehow built in to the existing tuner or 2. are they just selling you an add on radio and wiring it into the head unit. Toyota option info is very vague.

The radio comes satellite capable, and all of the wiring for the antenna is there. All you need is the the xm "tuner", and a "fit kit" (which is a bunch of wires with the correct connectors). You can get these on trdparts4u.com for around $300. The install doesn't even require removing the dash! the wires just plug into some jacks under the kick plate of the driver side door. It took me less than 20 minutes to complete.

Do you know if the tuner kit you reference, is it something that can be bought from the XM site? It seems to be terribly expensive from toyota (or even trdparts4u) when you compare it to the cost of xm radios.
Also, you mentioned the kick plate install on the driver side door - is there any instruction/direction available online to possibly illustrate and assist?

You can buy a tuner from XM, but it wont have the connections for plug and play into the truck. You'll just have a more tedious install, more like an aftermarket radio would be.

Here are the instructions for the install of the toyota kit.

That's what I don't want, aftermarket type thing. (I see pics here of radios clipped to air vents or in mounted in the compartment above the drink holders and really want to avoid something like that if at all possible.) I don't understand why Toyota is so vague/non-descrip about this option. About the only info I could find previous to here was just an XM logo and reference back to a dealer. And to me, this isn't a cheap $20-$50 option.
THANKS SO MUCH KPT for all the info and especially the PDF, YOU ROCK!

Please pass the crow. My radio DOES, in fact, have ASL (although it was turned off).
