Could you critique my setup please? ICON w/ Dakars, etc

Revised. This is going to be my build, am I missing anything? Please critique especially the suspension. Thanks!


Current Problem: Need to find out length of rear shocks needed to work with Dakar springs.

Did you get the extended rear shocks? If not you should for those dakars.

 

Might want to get icon UCA's

 

You have to get uniball upper control arms. I see a lot of trucks with Total Chaos or Icon.

Not a must, but i think the rear shocks you have now is set for a 0"-2.5" lift.
Dakars are 2.75"-3" lift if I read correctly. With the rear shocks you have now, it will limit the Dakar springs from full droop and possibly damage the shocks. You need extended shocks. these shocks are what you need for a correct setup for the rear.

 

If the rears aren't extended travel, the shock will be the limiting factor in down travel - asking for trouble.

With those springs, you won't need a sway bar. The suspension will behave better without it.

Extended brake lines? At least 3" front and rear. Contact @OCTaco for brake lines.

 

OK thanks for the info guys and thanks for pointing this out mauigrown! I left a msg with both the vendor and ICON to see if they can do a custom extended travel of the 2.5 shocks. I saw it on the SDHQ website, so hopefully the vendor I got it from (ORW) can revise the order. I'm trying to stay with 2.5 shocks.

 

No problem glad to help. I learned the hard way and ran standard length rears on my dakars for over a year. Until I did more research and found out I needed extanded rears for dakars lol. There's another solution you can do if you can't exchange you shocks.

This guys is running the same shock as you I believe. Extended lower tied rods the icon offers.

 

So I'm still trying to figure out the length of the rear shocks needed. ORW said to call ICON and ICON said to call ARB.. I called ARB and they said for the Dakars CS047R, I need rear shocks in these specs:

599mm (23.5827") extended / 360mm (14.1732") closed.

That's 9.409" of travel, which isn't much to my understanding? Correct me if I'm wrong. I'm checking with Brian from ICON to see if their off the shelf rear shocks are these specs or will they need to be custom.

 

I've found that OME typically runs short shocks, and that you have to compress the suspension a bit to get them to fit. They limit travel. I'd talk to a company that installs dakar's with icon shocks...

 

Extended travel shocks and sway bar will be working against each other.

Quick update - Brian from ICON emailed back and said if these numbers from ARB are accurate, their off-the-shelf shocks should work fine as their numbers are less than an inch off. This worries me a bit since I don't know if it's an inch too short, or inch too long. I've emailed back to find out since I rather it be too long than too short!

Cliff from SDHQ said their custom ICON rear shocks are roughly 28" extended and 18" collapsed. If I get custom lengths like that, would I need a shock relocation bracket?

 

Those icons from sdhq are the same length icons I have. You do not need a shock relocation bracket.

 

Sorry typo, Cliff from SDHQ said 18" collapsed, not 16". So that's 10" of travel. Do you know the exact extended and collapsed length for yours Chris? Otherwise I can ask Cliff to see if he can give me the actual spec. Then I'll forward the info to ORW to have ICON build to that spec.

Looks like you have your bases covered. Most people that have gotten the carrier bearing drop kit don't use it and take it off - vibrations don't seem to be caused by its location often from what I've read on here over the last couple years. Might want to look into it further before purchasing one and not using it.

 

Mine are 15.9″ coll. X 26.8″ ext. it's about 10.9" of travel if I remember correctly haha. At full droop, i think I still got about 1/4"-1/2" left of shock to extend. The springs will be the limit factor not the shocks, which is fine. I run a 4.5" bump stop in the rear. At full stuff and bumps compressed sitting on spring I got maybe an 1" of shock left to collapse. I could shave down the bump stop a 1/2" or so to stuff it more but I'm ok with how it is. All you need for your rear setup are those ext. icons and your rear setup should be good

@mauigrown Are these from SDHQ the ones you have? I called SDHQ and spoke to Jason. The specs for those are 16.65" collapsed and 28" extended. That's 11.35" travel. If that sounds right, I'm gonna request those specs.

All this is quite a difference from what ARB recommended!

 

These are the ones I have. Might be the same spec..? Maybe wheelers measure it from eye to eye, and sdhq measures it from tip to tip
