Wiring the aux input into an aftermarket head unit

I installed an Eclipse avn726e and integrated the steering wheel functions however I'd like to make the auxilliary port by the ciggarette lighter and 12v power supply plug useful.
I hate having broken/dummy features. Anyone know how to do this? Should I try to find a way to convert it to rca cables for the ipod connection?

Help would be appreciated.

Getting the part with the Aux port out is the hardest part. Then you can remove a small circuit board. Buy a stereo female stereo jack at Radio Shack and put it in the AUX panel. I then bought a cable to connect the the audio input (VTR) on the AVN726e and cut and soldered the other end to the jack mentioned above. Now I can plug in an MP3 player and select VTR as the source. Works fine.

While your at it, buy a USB extension cable and install it into the dummy blank next to the AUX jack. You can then plug in a USB drive with music on it. You can see a picture of it here:

Have you had any problems entering addresses for the Navigation? Try to enter an address such as: highway 46, US 206, CR 517, RT 10 etc. You can't do it. You can't enter anything but named streets according to tech support. Eclipse has acknowledged the problem but no fix.

When it gets a little warmer I'm going to connect the factory reverse camera to the AVN. I'll post when I ever get it done. Good luck.

 

Thanks for the heads up on the aux port. I took the time to install the usb that came with the avn726e in the blank black piece next to the aux port. It was meant to be i placed it centered vertically and believe it or not when using that usb cord you can just hollow the inside of the supports out for the black piece and it will fit so snugly that no glue/adhesive is needed to hold it in place, I was like whoa how f'n sweet. Im going to try hooking up my portable harddrive, you think this will work?

I haven't had any problems with entering addresses yet, but haven't tried a highway address.

 

I never thought of the hard drive. That would be wild if it worked. Let us know.

 

Generally, any ext HDD larger than a 1/8"(iPod size) requires more current than the .5A output allowed by the USB port. I can use about any size USB flash drive with my HU's USB port, I have a 1/8" 80GB ext HDD that works fine also. I tried a 60GB 2.5" ext HDD(laptop size), that would only work if I also tapped power off of an USB adapter in my 12VDC outlet.

 

My hard drive will fit perfectly in the compartment right under the headunit. For Power I have a 12v 100w converter that gives you a 120v plug, no problem as the power is right next to the compartment.

 

I have the AVN726 as well...just tried my SeaGate 300GB; no dice. And yes it's fat32 formatted.

 

What happened? hmmm. What makes the ipod recognized? What if we installed itunes on the hd? Think that would make a difference? I'm going to try mine on Friday(play day) and if I can't get it to work I'm going to call Eclipse and see if they have any ideas, would be hella cool.

 

^My Eclipse unit does not like mp3 cds, however it plays normal burned discs just fine, ARGGG! I hope I can figure something out because I got well over 30gig of music making the $250 ipod classic required if the HD doesn't work.

 

It should play MP3 CD's just fine. Are you sure they are MP3 or M4A or AAC?

Installing the iTunes program on the HDD wont help since the headunit wont open it. The HDD working or not has more to do with power requirements than anything else. The iPod works because it takes the task of grouping, ordering, and serving up the music.

 

I didn't have a usb to usb adapter for the hard drive, only firewire, bah! I went out and got a 64gb ipod touch. The bluetooth is awesome but using the usb cord gives more info and browsing of your tunes. Never had an ipod before, this is a cool device.

 

will that work - someone had installed rca jacks to the back of radio.. could i just get a adapter to covert to aux jack/? or will that not work..
