I agree with @flynnr. This is as clean an install as you will find. These kits are designed to fit a good many different trucks. Each model is going to be different and it is hard for the manufacturer to have custom instructions for every install. To me the hardest part was finding the right wires to tap. Thanks @dilbert for the pictures! That was dead on for my 2017 double cab 4x4 limited.

I purchased the Toyota kit and did the job yesterday. Pretty straighforward, and as noted previously slow and steady is the way to go. I waited until everything was routed and operational, and then starting from the rear working forward put the tie straps on to secure the harness. Couple of things to point out, the diameter of the 2 holes that you need to drill into the plastic clips is undersized, you need to not only get the connector through but the wire from the second connector. The approach to routing the wires under the carpet was to first remove the passenger door sill plate, it snaps into and out of its plastic base. I pulled the harness towards the exposed plastic base, and fished it to the front door area using a piece of steel wire. Pulling apart the plastic housing that covers the column that houses the seat belt seemed to be a potential train wreck, so I avoided it. The panel that covers the left side of the drivers break area snaps into place, but takes a bit of time to work loose. One last thing, the connector that your supposed to take out to splice into isn't entirely clear, or at least it wasn't for me. Nor was the orientation when looking for the wires to tap. Just take your time and look at the connectors from various vantage points and it will start to make sense.

Installed my Pop and Lock today on my DCLB with JBL. Found video helpful. Thank you. Like others, in my case, Green went to Green and Blue to Red (watch end of video for connections in cab), under the passenger side kick panel. I ran the harness up the passenger side frame rail, zip-tied to existing harness.

Installed my lock a few weeks ago. Only thing I did different was route the wire into the cab via the rubber grommet under the passenger seat. Quick and easy.

I like the idea of plug & play, but a much cheaper option would be to buy the individual connectors and wire; wire is cheap and the connectors shouldn't cost more than .25 cents each. I think you could save a ton of $$ by getting the plugs from Toyota OEM and then going generic on the wiring with male & female connectors. Just a thought... :)

Has anyone had reliability problems with the pop&lock kit? I have had mine installed for about 8 months or so now and have found that it doesn't reliably lock the gate. If I open up the gate and flex the actuator a bit it will start locking it reliably but then in another week or two it stops working again.

Any chance you could post a pic or diagram of where this grommet is? I'll be installing the Pop N Lock and would rather go through an existing hole closer to where I need to be than through the engine bay.

I just installed my Pop & Lock and I went in the tailgate from the same hole has the factory harness and then ran up along the passenger side frame rail (zip-tied to the existing harness every 6" or so. Then, nicely cut the nipple off the 2" grommet and pushed the harness into the passenger side under the glove box. I removed the kick panel and tapped into the connectors. Watch the guy's video a few pages back, but switch the two connections around (he got them backwards I think).

    Mine looks factory.

Right on brotha. I did this mod as well last weekend. Easy and simple install. The Youtube guy did have his wires reversed. I got my kick panel buttoned up and realized that my tailgate was doing the opposite so i just switched the wires at the actuator. The actuator does sound pretty loud in the tailgate but i don't mind. Its a good way for me to hear that its still working. I would def recommend this part and install.

    Cheers

Just did the install. It wasn't too difficult but just time consuming. Followed the YouTube video and the painful part was at the tailgate. Getting the 2 clips back on with the extra diameter of the pop n lock cable was a real PITA. I didn't go through the engine compartment and went through the existing wiring under the passenger side.....thanks to 16roller for the help. Didn't have to punch any extra holes anywhere and install looks clean. Works great and although you can fashion your own and save some money, for those not so inclined, I recommend the Pop N Lock.

    Guys, here's a question.

First of all my pop and lock stopped working, most likely a loose connection behind the kick panel that I need to sort out.

I guess I was luck in that it stopped working in the open (unlocked) position. Any idea how you could open up the tailgate if the lock stopped working in the closed (locked) position?

You would have to use the key. Lock solenoids won't stop a key from locking or unlocking if they have no power feed to them.

Just make sure that you have the tailgate in the same locking state (locked or un) as the rest of the doors when you fix you wires.
