Looking to buy a new or nearly new Tacoma (crew cab, 6 cyl., 4wd, SR5) in the next few months. I live in Seattle.

Are there significant changes from 2016 to 2017? Are new 2016's still available? Is there a best time of year to buy?

    Thanks for your help.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
The only real significant change is the power rear sliding window that's available on the 17's.

I just bought a 17 in Maryland and there were no 16s available at the 8 dealers I talked to.

I thought manual transmissions get the 4.30's but not the autos. Same as the 16's?

I thought I read something about the autos getting 4.30. But I could be wrong. I'm pretty sure it was one of @smitty99 s posts

Also, new TRD Pro version "available" in for the 2017 models. They are very hard to get right now and you have to be put down on a waitlist. There's a lot of other hurdles you have to go to try to get one of these but it is new for 2017.

The rear window motor is new and it kicks arse on the '17 and I believe you are correct that the gears on the '17 are different than the '16

No 16's left, unless they are a weird configuration few people want. They sold out quick. There is no rebate difference in the 16 and 17, so go with a 17. There isn't a best time of year to buy a Tacoma, since they never have any rebates. Toyota sells all they can make. The best time to buy is when you are ready. You can read all the B.S. articles about the time of year to buy, and always buy on the last day of the month, bla bla bla. With vehicles with no incentives, buy when you are ready, and when you find a dealer that is giving you a good price. On a Tacoma 5% off list is invoice cost, and that's a pretty good price. $500 over invoice is a fair price that most any dealer will do, and you can eliminate the B.S. and make the purchase hassle free. You can save $500-$1000 more, if you want to make buying a truck a project, and invest hours upon hours calling, emailing, and visiting several dealers.

Around here 2016s became scarce in August/Sept as the 2017s started flowing in.

Best time of year? Now. Seriously. Mid to late December as folks are focusing on holiday stuff.

Worst time to buy is when you HAVE to buy because your old car died. The ability to *wait* either for an ordered config or to walk out until you find a dealer willing to meet you price is invaluable.

you literally get no discount on the 16's.. i saw some at longo toyota but the price difference between the 16 and 17 was about 800.. same model.. might as well get a 17

I would wait until the last few days of the month because sales associates will by trying to meet their end of month, end of quarter and end of year sales goals. This could be good for you if they are desperate. I've been told that sometimes a dealership will actually lose money on the truck but the dealership will make up for it by getting a bonus from Toyota because they met their sales goals. Good luck.

Whoever gets that deep into the psychology with dealerships, should play professional poker.

I suck at poker. My brother in law was a car salesman for years and he told me this.
