color match painted my grill

so that duplo color rattle can crap works really well. i got sick of the chrome on my truck. tried plasti-dipping it, but didnt think it looked quite right. so i color match painted over the chrome with some primer and put on a billet grill.
open to criticism of course.
have fun at my expense.

 

Did you use a specific company to get the paint you used color matched?

 

duplicolor perfect match spray paint.

just make sure to use some primer first. then some clear afterwards. lots of super fine grit sandpaper in between.

I've heard people say painting over chrome that it always starts flaking/chipping after a year or 2. I want to try it but still a little hesitant.

 

even if it does though.....for the 8$ rattle can and a can of clear you can re-do it every few years if needed.
but im fairly certain if you sanded and primed it and did the job right the first time it should look fine in a few years.
im not a fan of the chrome so much so that even if it did i would rather it be cracking than chrome

Looks like you did a nice job! What are those small black nipples on the top side of the bumper near each end of the grille?

 

those dupli colors and clear coat get 5 stars rating from me. Used them when I did satoshi grill mod.

those are just some mounts for some deer whistler things (i have no idea what they are atually called, but they supposedly put off a high pitched sound that deer dont like so they dont run in front of your truck while driving through areas with deer. i took them off immediately but have never cared to take the mounts off) that were on there from the previous owner.

 

Looks nice im pretty sure you want an acid etching primer. I used the duplicolor on the wifes rav4 mgm. It did good and has held up for a few years now.

 

Did you paint over chrome on the RAV4? Care to give a rundown of products used and sanding steps?

 

Looks good, my grill is hurtig and the one thing on my truck I'd love to replace. I wish I had the nards to cut it up myself. Nice job OP

 

I felt like the grill mod rejuvenated my Tacoma.Only cost me about $50 out of my pocket.

 

I used a real lite sandpaper. 800 then a 1200. I did not paint over chrome but the plastic wheel moulding. Either way a super lite sandpaper and an acid etched primer should work. Make sure its acid etching. Then a few coats of the duplicolor and a really nice clear.

I used automotive touch up paint to color match my bumper. It is also really good paint......still holding up after 2 years.
