Thanks for your help with my wiring situation.

The diff is the same as taco. The FJ AWD setup replaces the passenger axle tube and does not have the actuator to disconnect the two axles. It is essentially engaged all the time. I'm sure you've heard of the dreaded ADD actuator failure. This modification eliminates that.

so is it only part-time 4wd now? or can you choose between full-time and part-time for better road manners? I've had to tear into my ADD before clean it up and reseal it... Rather not have to do that again, but I'm not trying to drive around in part-time...

Hmm. so If i plan on doing a 4x4 conversion, would a FJ front diff eliminate the need for me to have a ADD wiring harness like RST came up with? then all I'd need to do would be shift the FJ transfer case into 4?

Not quite sure what your part time and full time 4wd is referring to. After this mod, the only difference between my truck and a stock 4x4 truck is that my front diff and driveshaft are always spinning and dont have the option to disconnect. The only choices are 2wd and 4x4/4LOW just like a factory truck. I only engage/disengage the transfer case for 2wd/4x4/4Low versus having to engage the A.D.D. AND transfercase. And i do not have the FJ case, factory tacoma electronic transfer case. I'll make a new thread with the wiring info for this mod.

Keep in mind, not all FJ's have the "AWD" diff setup. Some still have the ADD. IF you have the FJ transfer case with manual actuation, you dont "NEED" any wiring if you dont want.

You could use a Tacoma, 4Runner or FJ front differential. But you'd also need an intermediate shaft from a 6 speed manual FJ Cruiser. There's a good write-up for that here:

Manual drive FJ cruisers have a full-time 4wd system, our tacoma's have a part-time 4wd system. the reason fj's can drive around in 4wd 100% of the time (without extreme wear and tear) is with the use of a center differential... Our Tacoma trucks do not have a center differential, which is why you get "tire lunge" when trying to make a tight turn. FJ cruisers can make these turns because the center differential allows the driveshafts to spin at slightly different speeds. So part-time 4wd = 50/50 split = shitty pavement performance, and full-time 4wd (with the use of the center differential) = 40/60 split = being able to turn into a parking spot. Then when off-roading the FJ can lock its center diff, which allows it to operate at a 50/50 split.

Also FJ's are not AWD... There is a big difference between 4wd and AWD.

Ahh gotcha, then throw some selectable hubs on it, and an FJ case then you have a fully manual 4x4 setup. i get it now.

So the Full time 4wd is basically AWD with center diff lock and 4 low??

Basically, yes. Dont think there are selectable hubs for these trucks though as they would probably be a very popular solution to the ADD system. A live axle would make things much simpler. You only have to worry about the transfer case engaging.

As far as I know, The manual hubs are obsolete for Tacomas, as they have the ADD. Selectable hubs would only be needed for the FJ front diff on a Tacoma, as it's the 'AWD' hub thats full time engaged, they would be used to counter wheel hop. FJ's don't get the wheel hop as they have the center diff. Tacoma don't have that and would experience wheel hop, as stated above.

The hitch is that the wheel bearings and CV axles are different between ADD and manual hub front ends. Any 1st gen Tacoma/3rd gen 4Runner can be converted using 1995.5-2000 Tacoma manual hub components because they all have the same front axle & suspension. But the 2nd gen Tacoma/4th gen 4Runner/FJ Cruiser are wider and have a different front axle and wheel bearing design, so no OEM or aftermarket locking hub parts will fit.

Farily certain a guy here on the forums came up with a manual hub solution to the 2nd gen tacomas, he has a short username and lives in hawaii if i remember correctly but alas i forget exactly who it was.

I respectfully disagree but I'd believe it if I saw it.
