Toyota Frame Settlement Postcard

I also just received the card and have not done anything yet for the same reasons. I haven't called around my area and will probably wait until April to see if the settlement is finalized.

 

I was literally the same boat, seeking action on my own as my frame is completely rusted through on both sides... Toyota told me to kick sand. Now I have recieved the same postcard. Anyone know anything about this?

LOL - Read this thread a hour or two ago - just brought in the mail and guess what was in among the catalogues and garbage mail - I would have just put it in the pile for recycling w/o reading it - I had my frame replaced at the dealer for free so I'm sure it doesn't apply to me.

 

The bottomline of this settlement (see Exhibit 11 in the final judgement Settlement Agreement) is that Toyota wil inspect frames on 2005-2010 Tacomas (and some other vehicles), up to 12 years from the first date of service, or up to 1 year after the judgement date (which will be sometime after 04/27/2017), and if a rust caused perforation of greater than 10 mm is found the frame will be replaced.

If rust damage with less than 10 mm perforation is found then in the defined "CRC" states (see below) the frame will have Corrosion Resistant Coating applied--if the frame was not previously replaced, or CRC was not previously applied.

The lawyers are getting $9.75m plus $150k in expenses.

FWIW the frame on my "always been in Florida" 2009 DCSB looks like new...

My frame was replaced about 2yrs ago on my 05 plus just sold it a month ago

This looks to be part of that new frame replacement lawsuit campaign that was just talked about not too long ago. I guess it's a separate or extension to the last frame replacement agreement.

Cant believe the 2nd gens also have significant frame rust issues as well... I though this was behind them. C'mon Toyota!

 

CRC should have been applied when frame was new,not weathered.I have seen it on some frames,and it looked like shit.Just a short term band-aid,better off using techniques like in other threads.I use slightly thinned lower unit lube,that works pretty good and stays on for quite awhile.

I have a feeling this will go beyond 2010?

I was initially cynical of CRC, because my neighbor has a 2004 Tacoma which ended up having the frame replaced and he said the CRC came off not lasting that long. It has been over 2 years and I can honestly say that the CRC coating has only came off in the spot that the dealership shouldn't have installed the frame plug and where I rub when working under it. I feel why it has held up so well has a lot to do with how I have taken care of it.

I agree with your feeling that it will go beyond 2010, because from my understanding the 2009 weren't supposed to be made by Dana, so what is the difference between a 2010 and a 2011??

I lived in New England for 45 years (Cape Cod, NH and ME, been here for 26 years now). One of our regular "first day the roads were clear after a storm" rituals was to rinse down the wheel wells, rocker panels, and under carriage to wash off the salt and at lesst try to prevent as much corrosion as possible--is this no longer something people do?

As I stated earlier the frame on my "Florida" '09 Tacoma looks liie new, and with the way it rains here it's certainly not from any lack of getting wet...

 

I've got a 06 and live in western nc.... I'm gsure man be calling my local dealer soon mine has no holes but decent surface rust!!! I do need new leafs though

 

If you look through most of the threads on frames that have failed, they have been rusting from the inside out. The new frames have plugs to keep salty water from getting inside them. My original frame looked pretty good externally for a 10 year old (at the time) truck, but failed in the same manor. I bring my truck through a touchless wash with undercarriage wash when ever possible, but there are some winters where it snows every other day. If the roads are still wet with salty water, it makes no sense to wash it.

On a side note, the body is mint.

 

This is what worries me. My 13 has just about 60k miles and the frame for the most part looks great. Just hints of rust at some weld spots. I have no idea how the inside of the frame is though. It has plugs, but I more so worry about where different plates on the frame meet that aren't welded and water and salt gets in there.

 

I've got Fluid Film on the new frame along with the plug kit (my new frame didn't come with it), and have faith that it will preserve it, but the shit is a sticky/waxy mess. I started a thread looking for alternatives, and there are a couple of promising products I may try next winter. The thing I like about FF, is that it seeps into all the crevices.

I believe April 27 is the hearing date and the final decision will be made on the settlement so set your calendars. Or set up a Google alert that sends you any new news on the frame rust settlement up until then. That's how I saw this post!

Toyota will still inspect your truck, mine was inspected about a month ago when my leaf springs were replaced on recall. They documented straight up that my frame has "some rust perforation" so I'll be hanging on to that document for sure. I haven't seen the thing in the mail yet but hopefully it shows up tomorrow or something.
