Canadian 3rd Gen Thread

I hate to ask this question as I know there are enough threads on it but I feel it differs for us in cold weather;
What kind of fuel mileage are you guys getting right now? I've only got 3000km's on my truck but am getting just over 13L/100km. Hoping it goes down when it breaks in more. Was really hoping to match the 11.5 I was getting in my old 2003 Tacoma with the 3.4L. Don't see that happening anymore.

 

In this cold weather, it all depends on "warm-up" time.....distance of commute.....Hwy-or not..
I know my mileage has suffered a little, but I'm retired and drive 25 KMs to town and 25 back most of the time.. Get around 13/100 or so, but when on Hwy for a few hundred KMs... then I get it down to 11.5 ish... Not bad for a truck...

 

What are your highway speeds? I was getting like 13.5 doing 130 but we tend to fight winds on the prairies. Also I have a manual, but that shouldn't matter much. I usually run around 2200rpm or so.

 

Never more than 110 KM.... OPP will not like that... How the hell you get away with that..?
There's your mileage downfall.... even mine... if I go 100 KM.. it is better, but 110 it drops... if you go more...you lose man...
Best L/KM is BELOW 100 KM... (slower is better)..

Actually the manual does matter a bit, the gearing is different between the autos and manuals. So you'll actually be running a higher rpm at the same speed compared to a automatic, the higher the rpm the more fuel is being burnt. Not much but it does make a difference, I think the manuals are rated from Toyota at 1 or 2 mpg less then the autos.

And doing 130 doesn't help you in the least.

 

Not like back in the day when the manuals would get better mpg then autos. I still don't believe what I see on their ratings and need to test it for my self.

 

This tank I'm at 13.5, best I've done was 10.7, that is driving like an old man. Yikes, when did that happen. Sucks getting old, haha. 100 and under is always good. Anything past 110, and it starts to suck gas.

Autos are supposed to be better, but I think mine lugs a little too much. Gas pedal has to be pressed down more in 6th, then when I shift to 5. A few more rpms to get 2000rpm and it actually uses less fuel, so no higher rpm does not always equate to increased fuel consumption. When I'm in drive doing anywhere north of 80k, truck will usually head for 6th gear. Anything but pure flat, or downhill and it's lugging. 1500rpm @ 100km/h. It's not in the sweet spot until around 2000rpm. Motor just has to work too hard at those low rpm. It is much happier closer to 2000rpm.

 

Cold weather driving, temps -10 to -30, mostly short trips (7 km or less), hilly little town, I have a hard time breaking 16 L/100 km. I would be very happy if i got 13.

 

I started tracking my mileage on Fuely.com Got my DCOR back in October. On a couple of long highway trips, I have gotten around 11.5 L/100K, but last few tanks, mostly in town, cold weather idling and warm up, 4WD in snow etc., I have been 16-17 L/100k.

 

I believe 80kmh is the magic number scientifically speaking before drag plays to much of a factor. I don't do 130 often other than clear back Prairie roads. Usually maximum 120-125 in the 110 zones. No OPP in Alberta! Or as much traffic.

 

I should also comment I think the manual has a different rear diff gearing, not sure how far off it is from the auto juice box but doing 130 I'm at like 2750 rpm.

I've been getting consitant 13.5. best I got was high 10s when puppying it on a road trip when it was new.

 

Does anybody have a softopper? Know any retailers to get one?

I live in a rural area I am getting about 10.5 overall the truck has a little over 9 k on it and is working well .Cheers

The folks in the US can't see it, so we'd need someone who works at Toyota in Canada.

for the TSBs for the transmission has anyone used the ones from here?

I was looking at them on here and noticed they say USA on them, wasn't sure if I could print that and bring it to the dealer and have them do it as well or if canadian will have a different TSB.
The dealer I'm going to don't deal with trucks a lot so might not be aware of a TSB nor do I want to have them try and give me the run around. I have the delay from shifting from R to D

 

Finally had my Softopper arrive today after 2 weeks of weather delays!
even though I'm sick as a dog I still had to install it.
