Hello everyone. I have a 16 taco. V-6 manual. I have had a persistent couple issues with the truck since 500km.

1st one is sometimes stalls on start up or as I am pulling out of my driveway only under a bit of load.

2nd. When motor is under load it seems to have a misfire condition surge and erratic rpm. Also if I get heavy on gas and up shift it seems to die for a second then decide to accelerate but still with what I would call a missfire.

Of course dealer said nothing wrong and said I had bad gas........

    Any suggestions.

    Thx

Can you replicate the issue or is it randomly occurring?

Stalling on start no after warmed up it's fine other that what I think is a smooth start.

The stumble misfire I can replicate with no issue. It's like truck running on 5 cyl. And truck not throwing codes

I'd go to the dealer and ask for a technician to go for a ride with you. They should do this without problem and they should also bring their laptop with TechStream plugged into your OBD2 port.

They can watch the entirety of your systems under normal operation and they can also see it change (in real time) when the problem occurs. They can also save this data and use it to send to Toyota to study the possible causes.

I did this with my truck and it got me a fix. If the dealer refuses then go to another.

^^ I completely agree. Let the dealer perform the tests. After all, that's why there is a warranty.

I bought a 15$ bluetooth OBDII reader and use OBDII doctor on my phone and shows me engine load etc, if you want to see for yourself what's going on without having to hassle with dealer for time being

Had it there twice already. This time they are coming for a road test. And might actually have to pull the tools out. I'm a heavy equipment mech my tools actually leave my box. No plug in diagnosis for me. Lol I figured a cam position sensor. But mechanic looked at me like a deer in headlights and said that the computer said it was running fine..... Lol

I have the misfire/stumble condition. Very subtle, very frustrating.

When you upshift what RPM are you falling into after the shift? If you mash the gas at lower RPM in this truck (especially sub 2k) in anything but 1st, it is brutal. Lurches/surges progressively until you get above about 2.2-2.4k (estimate).

I shift above about 3k RPM to avoid it. 1st gear I will shift earlier but be easier on the throttle as I come up in 2nd. If you need to go quick, you need to really wind out 1st.

I have noticed some improvements as well with 89 no ethanol. Although it does still stutter from time to time. Also solves chirping noise for me, high pitch whistle noise with quick acceleration and mph improves. So far improvements are worth the price

Not quite the same as TechStream, but a good way to spend $15.

    Sounds like an ethanol issue.

Can the 3.5 run ethanol fuel?

Only up to e15, which I'm sure is a regulated requirement at this point.

It could be flaky and that's why they don't see it. It hasn't actually failed yet.

I'm interested in hearing the result. My truck is running fine, but I wonder if I should just buy a spare.
