I finally squished my TRD exhaust tip at Tahuya on Saturday. I was just a follower, but I don't think we did any new stuff. Nothing too challenging. In fact, aside from the last hill climb to get out of the park I never used 4wd. I did switch my locker on a few times, but I was trying to prove to a guy with a pre-runner Taco that he could have done anything we did.

There was a lottt of ice out there. All the big puddles were completely frozen over and when we drove through them they broke, revealing they were 3-4" thick.

The big "mud lake" where people like to hydrolock was also frozen over. A guy in a Samurai drove over the middle without breaking through.

    I forgot about that.
If this Portland crowd keeps rolling strong (which I have no doubt of), I'm expecting us (I guess I'm sort of part of it, too) to produce 15 vehicles minimum. Finding camping is going to be a nightmare, mainly because of the parking. I still haven't found a place that's both close AND big enough to support a lot of trucks THAT I can guarantee won't be taken up. Best place I found was down in Jordan Creek area.

Any of you guys think I'm crazy for saying this?

    My understanding:
OP's diff goes out on highway at 55, wheels lock up.
OP posts here, TW blows shit up
OP goes in for warranty service
Dealer does warranty service, but does writeup weird - "remove and replace rear diff assy with driveshaft assy"
TW blows up thinking on the driveshaft got replaced, hell ensues for a bit
OP and TW state the truck is a whole lemon and needs full replacement, maybe for a Chevy even because Tacos are scary
I state that it's a normal warranty job, looks like shop did what they needed. If OP thinks truck is possessed, I will buy it for half and begin beast-moding it.

I didnt read that thread. But what you wrote seems fine and I wouldnt call you crazy.

Sounds like just bad luck and an improperly setup Ring and Pinon or something else in the third member. Bolt finally caught and seized the whole thing up. Though if i was him i would be asking for a whole new rear axle or least axle shafts as Im sure theres some abnormal wear on the splines now.

As for the "remove and replace rear diff assy with driveshaft assy" I dont find that weird. Replace rear third member and rear drive shaft. I wouldnt be surprised if the third seized up like the OP says to not have some damage to the drive shaft. Drive shaft still has power being provided to it while one end is being held from rotating. Could have damaged the u-joints or something

Sounds like what Will's truck did a few years ago at Tahuya, except going faster. What you posted sounds perfectly within reason to me. If I had the extra money, I'd consider getting that truck just to have a Tacoma again. That could have damaged all the way up the power train for such a sudden stop in motion from 55mph.

Your comments don't seem out of place to me. I don't know why it is these days, but every time something goes wrong, many people think they are entitled to a brand new "whatever" or a complete refund plus compensation for "I could have been killed/maimed" and that a repair is not acceptable.

And I read the "replace rear diff assy with driveshaft assy" to be a complete unit replacement from the transfer case output yoke to driveshaft yoke to the pinion gear and third member, not just replacing a driveshaft and leaving a busted ring/pinion in place. Quite frankly, only a moron would believe that......

It really is no wonder that my truck has so many warning signs, in multiple languages, posted everywhere.

Damn didn't think there would be that thick of ice. Hopefully this warmer week will thaw it out.

Ive made it through in 2wd as well, just yellow jacket hill and the other one next to it require 4wd and lockers

Probably, we headed out Friday morning. Must not have been driving the truck, I'm pretty sure I would've noticed you.

Yeah I have seen them over there before in the summer at a different winery. When we first showed up we couldn't figure out where the 15 people in the tasting room came from with only 2 other cars in the parking lot. Then it was sitting there when we left and it all made sense.

LOTS of ice. Even the lakes/ponds along the main road before the staging area were frozen over. You can kinda see how thick the chunks are in these pictures.

I don't know what any of the hills/trails are called but I used 4wd for this one. Pretty tight at the top with a sharp right turn to exit.
