Low profile alternatives to bed rail cleats

I just installed the American Roll Cover by Truck Covers USA (what a stellar piece of equipment it is) and unfortunately it renders the bed rail cleats unusable as it clamps on to the bed rails and sits too low for the cleats to stay in the bedrails.

I'd love to be able to have something similar for attaching tie downs and hanging things off (I just bought the envelope cargo net, doh)... so combinations of rings and hooks, but they'd have to be fairly low profile or hang below the bed rail.

I'd be super grateful if anyone could point me towards anything they've used or have seen:

Do something with the T-nuts that've been posted up here. I think Grainger carries them. Those two terms should help you find em via the search function.

Check out the Toyota mini tie downs. Way overpriced for what they are, but they may be what you're looking for if you want an OEM look.

I bought a set when I got my 2005. They still sell something similar but with hooks that mine don't have.

 

These look pretty good but not sure if they'll work, depends on how mini they are... there's only about an inch above centre and an inch out from the top of the rail that's available. Any chance you could spin yours vertically and measure/snap me a shot along the bed rail?

I'll pop down the dealer in a day or two see what they have to look at

 

I had a play around with the OEM cleats and the biggest issue is the wheel - take that off, replace it with a nut and it'll fit just fine. It's flush up against the top of the tonneau rail so it loses some of it's function but for occasional bungees and securing lighter cargo I'm sure it'll be fine - at least it'll work until I find a need for something different, but that's a problem/project for future me...

I'll grab a couple more pictures once I've picked up the right nuts and have them in place but this should give you an idea.
The curved part of the D is lost, thats the part thats flush against the tonneau rail but there's enough of a gap (about an inch) between the flat part and the pointy bit to get the end of a bungee or a tie down in. Win!
