Larger oil filter than stock?

THe stock oil filter is wimpy. Is there a larger size one I can get from walmat or auto zone? What is the ID number??

I was a little disappointed when I found out that my 4.0L used the same filter as the 4cyl. what really got me is when I got my new filter and go home I looked at an extra filter I had from my Mazda 3 2.0L and its the same as the one for my truck, I even questioned it and checked on the company's website and it is the same. What the heck? Is the 4.0L a really clean motor or do all Japanese cars and trucks use the same filter?

Id say keep the factory filters, they are designed to work with our engines, i know the fram and pure ones are smaller. I got a case of 10 from the dealer for $40.

 

Yeah your prob right, the guys at ttora swear by them, I try to stick with oem stuff any way. I guess if it ever blew maybe youd have a better case than if it happened with aftermarket?

 

I agree. More filter area, means more area to filter. Plus it holds more oil.

 

Ok a couple points

One reason companies like Toyota do so well financially is that they use the same filters, screws, alternators, engines, etc., across a variety of vehicles. So, they make one filter and use it across a bunch of engines. It doesn't mean the filter is inadequate for the engine.

I traded in my 4runner with just under 300,000km on the engine (around 200,000 miles). It had had no work done to it, except the timing belt. I know people who have driven Camries almost twice as far with no engine repair.

I'd give Toyota the benefit of the doubt with respect to what fits with what.

 

If you want a better filter go to Napa and get a Napa Gold filter, it is made by Wix and you can really tell how much better the quality of the Napa filter is. Make sure it is the Napa Gold!

Exactly. Boeing does the same thing. Most of the parts are interchangeable between models. Saves big bucks all across the board.

 

It's not enough that a filter will simply screw on to the engine, even if it is a high quality filter.

Oxymar00n's post raises a couple important points about filters aside from the the media: the anti-drainback valve and the pressure relief valve.

If the media is high quality media and there's enough of it, then your're fine there. (The cheapo Wal-Mart Supertech filters have better media and overall construction than a Fram, BTW.)

But the anti-drainback valve and the bypass valve must both be appropriate for your particular engine. If you buy a non-toyota filter, be sure the manufacturer has listed it for use with your engine.

Just because it fits doesn't mean it will work well.

 

I bought a case of 10 of these from a Stealership on Ebay for $37, shipped. I have yet to change my oil since, but will be using them for the next 50k miles.

I was later told (somewhere on this website) that there might be a difference between the ones that are made in Japan and the ones that are made in Taiwan, and one of the reasons you can sometimes get cases of them for so cheap is b/c they're the ones made in Taiwan. I went to check and the ones I purchased have "Made in Taiwan" written on them.

I don't know what the difference is, but they're still OEM filters and I still plan to use them in the truck. They're larger than the one that came on the truck, which I like, and they're Toyota products, which is fine by me. Just putting it out there.

 

I just stopped at the most reputable Toyota stealershipin my area and bought 4 filters for $20 (didnt want to order, then wait). These are "made in Taiwan". So whats the difference?

There's a thread here floating around somewhere where the guy dissects a bunch of filters, the Toyota filter was the best for overall quality.

You shouldn't be overly worried with the amount of filter material. Some engineer somewhere did all the maths and said "this filter will be sufficient for xxxxKM/Mi.

What you should be concerned about is the amount of particulate the filter lets through, and the general construction of the filter.

Plus Toyota does the little things, like prelubes the oring for you!

Toyota, you're the best.
